CAIRO—Egypt'sPresidentMohamedMorsionWednesdayvowedhisgovernmentwilltacklepressingeconomicproblemsmainlybroughtonbynearlytwoyearsofpoliticalturmoilandsocialupheaval.Expertssaythecountryfacesmoretougheconomictimesasthecycleofelectionsandprotestscontinues.

“It'snormalanywherethatyougetaffectedbythecountry'scircumstances.Aslongasthereistensioninthecountry,there'snotmuchbusiness.Whenthesituationreturnstonormal,therewillbenothingtoworryabout,”saidMohammed.

Atthesametime,foreigninvestmentandtourismaredown,andthegovernment'sforeigncurrencyreserveshavebeencutinhalf.

“Theeconomyisavictimofthepoliticaltransition,"saidPoliticalEconomicsProfessorAshrafMishrifatLondon'sKing'sCollege."Wehaveseentheeconomyisactuallysufferingsignificantlyfromtheuprising,theprotestsoverthelasttwoyears.”

Mishrif,himselfanEgyptian,isnotsurprisedthattwoyearsofpoliticalprotestsanduncertaintyhavehurtforeigninvestment.

“Thehighpoliticalriskassociatedwiththetransitionhasreallyimpactednegativelyandledtodisinvestmentinthecountry.Someofthecompaniesactuallytriedtofindmoreastablemarkettoinvesttheircapitalin,”hesaid.

Inthecurrentpoliticalatmosphere,Egypt'snewleadershavestruggledtoturntheeconomyaround,announcingandthencancelingtaxandpriceincreases,andpostponingacrucialInternationalMonetaryFundloanbecausetheycan'tmeettheconditions.

AttheEgyptWorldTradeOrganizationInstitute,atradeandinvestmentpromotioncompany,managerMohammedHeshamsaidhebelievestheeconomywillbouncebackoncethepoliticalsituationstabilizes.

“Thegovernmenthastotakecareoftheeconomicside.Itmust.Thepeoplewanteconomicstabilityandfastgrowthandtheyneedalotofjobs.Thisisthemaindutyforthisgovernmentandthispresident.”

Heacknowledged,though,thatwouldrequireaneasingofthetensionandproteststhathavebecomearegularfeatureinEgyptduringthelasttwoyears.ThemainlyIslamistsupportersofthenewconstitutionhopeitwillbringsomestability,buttheoppositionhasvowedtokeepupthepressureonthestreetsasparliamentaryelectionsapproach,fearingthecountrywillbecometooreligiouslyconservative.Expertssaythatwillmakeitdifficultforthegovernmenttotakeunpopularstepsontheeconomy,andlikelywilldelayanyrecovery.
