Afterthreateningtoclosetheloss-makingIndianPacific,thefederalgovernmentinCanberrasolditandtheGhan,anotheroutbackpassengertrain,toGreatSouthernRailway(GSR),aBritish-ownedprivateconsortium,in19xx.GSRhasnowturnedafirst-yearlossofA$20m($15m)intoasmalloperatingprofitbyrestoringrollingstock,hiringyoung,multi-skilled,non-unionisedcrewsandre-marketingthetrainstolocalsandtouristsalike.OneinnovationwastosendtheIndianPacificonawhistle-stopChristmasruntakinggiftsandmusictotheoutback.Thisyear'sjourney,thefifth,withimpromptuconcertsatremotesidingsbyJimmyBarnes,anAustralianrockstar,drewthebiggestcrowdssofar.BrokenHill,atowninwesternNewSouthWalesstrugglingsinceitsbigsilver,leadandzincminestartedwindingdown,nowreliesontheIndianPacific‘stouristpassengersforeconomiclifeblood.
TheGhan'srevivalonthenorth-southtranscontinentallinehasbeenevenmoreremarkable.The65,000-pluspassengersitcarriedthroughtheNorthernTerritoryin20xxwere60%morethaninthepreviousyear.PublicinterestgrewaftertheopeningofanewlinebetweenAliceSpringsandDarwin,allowingpeopletomakethetwo-dayjourneyfromAdelaidebyrailforthefirsttime.GSRplanstodoubletheGhan‘sfrequencyin20xx.
