  SuchaplanetwouldhaveadiameteratleastaslargeasEarth’s,butnomorethantwice thatbig.Theplanetalsowouldhavetoorbitinastar’shabitablezone.That’swherethe surfacetemperaturewouldallowanywatertoexistasaliquid.

  Thenewestimateofhowmanyplanetsmightfittheseconditionscomesfrom studyingmorethan42,000starsandidentifyingsuitableworldsorbitingthem.Thescientistsusedthosenumberstoextrapolate(推算)totherestofthestarsthatthe telescopecouldnotsee.
