IreneenteredtheUniversityofParisin1914toprepareforadegreeinmathematicsandphysics.WhenWorldWarIbegan,Irenewenttohelphermother,whowasusingX-rayfacilitiestohelpsavethelivesofinjuredsoldiers.IrenecontinuedtheworkbydevelopingX-rayfacilitiesinmilitary(军事的)hospitalsinFranceandBelgium.HerserviceswererecognizedintheformofaMilitary’sMedalbytheFrenchgovernment.

In1918,Irenebecamehermother’sassistantattheCurieInstitute.InDecember1924,FredericJoliotjoinedtheInstitute,andIrenetaughthimthetechnologyrequiredforhiswork.Theysoonfellinloveandweremarriedin1926.TheirdaughterHelenewasbornin1927andtheirsonPierrefiveyearslater.
