Academically,sciencehasalwaysbeenmymaininterestandistheareainwhichIammostable.Ienjoyedbiology,inparticularlearningabouthumanimpactontheenvironment.However,duringmyAlevelsIrealisedthatmyinterestslaydeeperinmathsandphysics.Ienjoyedtheproblemsolvinginvolvedwithinmysubjectsandthewayareallifesituationcouldbeexpressedandmanipulatedmathematically.WhatIfoundparticularlyinterestingwasrelatingwhathadbeenlearntintheclassroomtoreallifesituations,whichiswhatgavememoreinterestincivilengineering-theappealofachallengingcareerwhereIwouldhavetheopportunitytotheoreticallysolveproblemsandpracticallyapplysolutionstohaveabeneficialeffectontheworldaroundme.

DuringmygapyearIhavehadseveralworkexperienceplacementsinvariousskilledtradessuchasbuildingandjoinery.ThroughjoineryIgainedanappreciationoftheneedforauratedesignandconstruction,aswellasaknowledgeoftheusesofwoodasabuildingmaterial.ThoughmuchofthebuildingworkIhaveundertakenwasinconstruction,Ifoundittobeinvaluableexperience.Forexample,whilsthelpingtobuildagarageIlearntabouttheimportanceofgooddesignandplanningbyhavingtointerpretthedesignsinordertodeterminehowmanybrickswouldbeneeded.DuringitsconstuctionInoticedhowimportantitwastobuildaurately,particuallyatthecornersofthebuildingwhichsupportedmostoftheweightoftheroof.Ialsodiscoveredtheimportanceofkeepingcostslow,butthequalityofworkhigh.Wemadeadifferenttypeofcementwhichwascheaperandweaker,butstillmettheneedsfortheinnerwalls.Themostrewardingpartofthisexperienceseeingtheprojectthroughfromaplanonpapertoitspletion,andthefeelingofsatisfactiononceitwaspletelybuilt.

Ihaveapassionateinterestinmusicandhavebeenplayingguitarforabout5years.Ihaveenjoyedmytimeasamemberofaband,whichhashelpedmetoworkcreativelyaspartofateam.Morerecently,Ihavealsoachievedgrade2injazzpiano.ForyearsIhavehadagreatenthusiasmforskateboardingandinNovemberxxbeganundertakingvoluntaryworkwithagrouphelpingtoplananddesignaskateboardingfacilityinKingsHeathpark.Wewereinvolvedinpreparatoryworksuchasgaining

publicsupportandundertakingresearchatexistingfacilitiesacrosstheUK,aswellasitsdesign.FromthisexperienceIlearnttheimportanceofworkingaspartofateamandmeetingdeadlines.Also,Igainedanunderstandingofjusthowmuchpreparationandorganisationisneeded,evenforasmalldevelopment.
