Inthisintroductorychapterwewillmainlyreviewthehistoryofwirelessnetworks,fromthesmokesignalsofthePre-industrialagetothecellular,satellite,andotherwirelessnetworksoftoday.Wethendiscussthewirelessvisioninmoredetail,includingthetechnicalchallengesthatmustbeovercometomakethisvisionareality.Wewillalsodescribethecurrentwirelesssystemsinoperationtodayaswellasemergingsystemsandstandards.Thehugegapbetweentheperformanceofcurrentsystemsandthevisionforfuturesystemsindicatesthatmuchresearchremainstobedonetomakethewirelessvisionareality.
