Onsayingthatourambitiondecidesourdestiny,JosephEpsteinisjusttryingtoestablishanotherdefinitionofAmericanDreamthatthosewillingenoughtochoosetheirdestinywillaccomplishit.Maybepeopleasambitiousandinnocentas“greatGatsby”willbelievethis,butonexaminingthisbeliefcarefullyandcheckingthefatefinallyfellonthosepeople,weareprompttosaythatitisnottrue,simplyforthefactthatlifedoesnotnaturallyfollowone’swillandthereisanothermightyhandformingourdestiny:

theenvironment.

Firstly,therealityoflifeandhistorytellusthathowoftenourdestinyhasrepelledagainstourambitionandhowitdespisesourambition.Inhistory,itisreasonabletoassumethatmorethanhundredsofkingsorconquerors,orotherdistinguishedmembersofhumanbeingshavetheambitiontoconquerthewholeworldandletthatconquestlastforever,butinreality,onlyCaesar,AlexanderandNapoleonhavepartlyaccomplishedthefirstpartofthisambitionandastothesecondpart,ithasyetbeen,untilnow,a“missionimpossible”.Noonewilldenythisambitionisstrong,greatandinspiringenough,butstillmanyamongthosewhopossessthisambitionhasendedupaslosers,tyrantsortheworst,beggars.IwonderhowqueerwouldJosephEpsteinfound,thatthesamewonderfulambitioncouldhaveproducedsoamazinglydifferentdestinies.
