Scientistsinthe1950sproclaimedtherobotthebrainwaveofthefuture—itwouldfreehousewivesofdrudgeryandfillfactorieswithatirelessworkforce.Butinmanyways,thebrainwavehasbeenawashout.

Robotscanpaintcars,salvagenuclearfuelandevenassistinbrainsurgery,butthey’restillprettydumb.

Tomanyweb-buildingspiders,mostofwhomarenearlyblind,thewebistheiressentialwindowontheworld:
