Anne’sstory:
AnneFrankwasbornonJune12,1929inFrankfurtGermany.AtthattimetheJewishcommunityformedanimportantpartofthecity’seconomicandculturalsuccess.Herfather,OttoFrank,wasarespectedbusinessmanwhosefamilyhadlivedinthecityformanygenerations.Theylivedinacomfortablefive-roomflatandAnnewasraisedwithgreatloveandcare.Inthespringof1934,ayearafterHitlerandhisNaziPartyrosetopower,thefamilymovedtoHolland,whosepeoplewelcomedthem.
TheNaziPartyruledGermanyfrom1933to1945.OneoftheirkeypolicieswastokillalltheJewsinEurope.WhenJewswerefound,theyweresenttoconcentrationcampsfarthereasttobekilled,mostlyinPoland.
TheFranksandanotherfamily,theVanDaans,hidtogetherforjustovertwoyearsbeforetheywerediscovered.ThebuildinginAmsterdamwhereAnneFrank’sfamilyhidwasasmallbusinessofficewithstoragerooms.Duringthedaythebuildingservedasaplaceofbusiness.Afterworkinghours,theFrankfamily’sDutchfriendsbroughtthemfood,clothing,newsfromtheoutsideworld,andcomfort.Sadly,aDutchemployeeintheofficetoldtheGestapooftheirhidingplace,sotheywerearrested.
TheywereintheofthelastgroupsofJewstobetakentothecamps.Anne’smotherinPolandandstayedbehindwhenAnne,hersister,andMrs.VanDaansweremovedtoBelsen,asmallercampinGermany.Peterwhowasinbetterhealththantheothers,wasforcedintoalongmarchfromthecampwherehedisappeared.MargotdiedinMarch,1945andAnnediedjustbeforeher16thbirthdayandlessthanamonthbeforethesurvivingJewswerefreedbyAmerican,British,CanadianandRussiansoldiers.
TheprimaryschoolAnneattendedinAmsterdamisnownamedafterher.Everyyearsheisrememberedinatravelingexhibitionthatexplainsherlifeandherexperience.
