Theaveragetestscore,outof75totalpossibleanswers,was55percent.Thestudyidentifiesafewimportantproblems.Foreample,only30percentnewthattheonlypartoftheU.S.governmentthatcandeclarewarisCongress.Only60%ofthosetaingthesurveycouldidentifyBrailonaworldmap.
Partoftheproblem,arguetheorganiersofthesurvey,istheinternet.Theysayitisbecominghardertofindhigh-qualityinformationaboutworldeventsamongstallthefaenewsandtriviawhichswamptheweb.Forty-threepercentofthosequestionedsaidtheyreadaboutthenewsonFaceboo.
Anotherproblemisthatmostcollegecoursesdonotrequirestudentstolearnaboutinternationalissues.Ifsuchinformationisnotrequired,RichardHaassfromtheCouncilonForeignRelationssaid,thentheUnitedStatescouldhaveleaderslieGaryJohnson.HewasarecentpresidentialcandidatewhodidnotnowabouttheSyriancityofAleppowhenareporterasedhimaboutit.
Thesurveyresultswerenotallbad.Theyoungpeoplealsodemonstratedagoodunderstandingofclimatechangeandrenewableenergy.Andthemajorityofthemsaidthatinternationalissueswerebecomingmoreimportanttothem.
