Itdocumented131problemsper100domestic(国内的)vehicles,comparedwith95per100foreignvehicles.The36-pointgapwasthenarrowestinthestudy’sseven-yearhistory.WhenChinaovertooktheUSastheworld’slargestcarmakerinthe2009,thegapbetweendomesticandforeigncarswas145points.“It’sevidencetotheimprovementsthatdomesticbrandshavebeenmaking,”saidGeoffBroderick,headofJ.D.Power’soperations.“By2018thedomesticandtheglobalbrandswillbeequalintermsofquality.”
Despitethesteadyimprovementinquality,localvehiclemakershavebeenperforming

Burd’sstrategywassimple:
Sinceplasticdoeseventuallydegrade,itmustbeeatenbymicroorganisms(微生物).Ifthosemicroorganismscouldbeidentified,wecouldputthemtoworkeatingtheplasticmuchfasterthanundernormalconditions.
Withthisgoalinmind,hegroundedplasticbagsintoapowderandconcocted(调制)asolutionofhouseholdchemicals,yeast(酵母)andtapwatertoencouragemicrobesgrowth.Thenheaddedtheplasticpowderandletthemicrobesworktheirmagicfor3months.Finally,hetestedtheresultingbacterialcultureonplasticbags,exposingoneplasticsampletodeadbacteriaasacontrol.Sureenough,theplasticexposed(暴露)tothelivebacteriawas17%lighterthanthecontrolaftersixweeks.
Theinputsarecheap,maintainingtherequiredtemperaturetakeslittleenergybecausemicrobesproduceheatastheywork,andtheonlyoutputsarewaterandtinylevelsofcarbondioxide.
