Itdocumented131problemsper100domestic（国内的）vehicles,comparedwith95per100foreignvehicles.The36-pointgapwasthenarrowestinthestudy’sseven-yearhistory.WhenChinaovertooktheUSastheworld’slargestcarmakerinthe2009,thegapbetweendomesticandforeigncarswas145points.“It’sevidencetotheimprovementsthatdomesticbrandshavebeenmaking,”saidGeoffBroderick,headofJ.D.Power’soperations.“By2018thedomesticandtheglobalbrandswillbeequalintermsofquality.”

Despitethesteadyimprovementinquality,localvehiclemakershavebeenperforming

poorlythisyear.AccordingtotheChinaAssociationofAutomobileManufacturers,domesticbrand’sshareofthemarketforcars—notincludingSUVs—hasfallenfromabout25percentto20percent.

Locatedabout100milessouthwesttoShanghai,Hangzhouishometo844millionpopulationandamongChina’srichestcitiesasmeasuresbyper-capitaGDP.Traditionally,HangzhouisknownforitscharmingWestLake,aUNESCOworldheritagesitewithtraditionalChinesestoriesandtales,andtheGrandCanal,whichtravelsfromHangzhoutoBeijingandwasakeyrouteoftransportationinancientChina.Thecity’smildclimateandcharmingenvironmentdrew97milliontouristslastyear,contributingto6.5%ofthecity’sGDP.

Burd’sstrategywassimple:

Sinceplasticdoeseventuallydegrade,itmustbeeatenbymicroorganisms（微生物）．Ifthosemicroorganismscouldbeidentified,wecouldputthemtoworkeatingtheplasticmuchfasterthanundernormalconditions.

Withthisgoalinmind,hegroundedplasticbagsintoapowderandconcocted（调制）asolutionofhouseholdchemicals,yeast（酵母）andtapwatertoencouragemicrobesgrowth．Thenheaddedtheplasticpowderandletthemicrobesworktheirmagicfor3months．Finally,hetestedtheresultingbacterialcultureonplasticbags,exposingoneplasticsampletodeadbacteriaasacontrol．Sureenough,theplasticexposed（暴露）tothelivebacteriawas17%lighterthanthecontrolaftersixweeks.

Theinputsarecheap,maintainingtherequiredtemperaturetakeslittleenergybecausemicrobesproduceheatastheywork,andtheonlyoutputsarewaterandtinylevelsofcarbondioxide.
