ProfessorJeraldJellisonoftheUniversityofSouthernCaliforniahasmadeascientificstudyoflying.Accordingtohim,womenarebetterliarsthanmen,particularlywhentellinga“whitelie”,suchaswhenawomanatapartytellsanotherwomanthatshelikesherdresswhenshereallythinksitlooksterrible.However,thisisonlyonesideofthestory.Otherresearcherssaythatmenaremorelikelytotellseriouslies,suchasmakingapromisethattheyhavenointentionofcarryingout.Thisisthekindofliepoliticiansandbusinessmenaresupposedtobeparticularlyskilledat:
theliefromwhichtheliarhopestoprofitorgaininsomeway.
Researchhasalsobeendoneintothewaypeople’sbehavior(行为)changesinanumberofsmall,apparentlyunimportantwayswhentheylie.Ithasbeenfoundthatiftheyaresittingdownatthetime,theytendtomoveaboutintheirchairsmorethanusual.Tothetrainedobservertheyaresaying“IwishIweresomewhereelsenow.”Theyalsotendtotouchcertainpartsofthefacemoreoften,inparticularthenose.Oneexplanationofthismaybethatlyingcausesaslightincreaseinbloodpressure.Thetipofthenoseisverysensitive(敏感的)tosuchchangesandtheincreasedpressuremakesititch(发痒).
