TherearearoundtwelvecomponentsofGreenRevolutionsuchashighyieldingvarietiesofseeds(HYV),irrigation–surfaceandground,useofchemicalfertilisers,insecticidesandpesticides,CommandAreaDevelopment(CAD),landreforms,consolidationofholdings,supplyofagriculturalcredit,electrificationofruralareas,constructionofroadsandmarkets,farmmechanismanddevelopmentofagriculturaluniversities.
Thesecomponentsdonotworkinisolation.Infactitistheconsolidateddevelopmentofallthesecomponentsthatresultintheoveralldevelopment.GreenRevolutionhasinfluencedIndianEconomytoalargeextent.Onemajorproblemliesinthefactthattherevolutiondidnotspreadevenlytoallthepartsofthecountry.
WiththeintroductionofGreenRevolutionin1967-68,therewasaphenomenalincreaseintheproductionoffoodgrains,especiallythewheat.Thus,GreenRevolutioninIndiacanbeexclusivelycalledwheatrevolution.GreenRevolutionincreasedproductionthusbringingprosperitytothefarmers.Theincreasedproductionwithinthecountrymadethecountryself-sufficientandself-reliantinfoodgrains.Thisledtoaconsiderabledecreaseinthequantityofimport.Infact,nowmanyatimesweareinapositiontoexport.
Withtheuseofmechanisedandscientificmethodsinfarming,industriestoosprangup.Tractors,harvesters,threshers,electricalmotors,dieselengines,pumpsetcbegantobemanufacturedonalargescale.Besidesdemandsforpesticides,fertilisers,insecticidesincreasedthenumberoffertiliserplantsinthecountry.Consequently,therewereincreasedemploymentopportunities,especiallyintheruralareas.
Eventhough,GreenRevolutionturnedouttobeauniqueeventinthehistoryofIndependentIndiabyresolvingtheproblemsofhunger,famineandstarvation,yetithadcertaindemerits.GreenRevolutionhasgreatlyprofitedtherichfarmersbuthasfailedtoprofitthesmallerones.Rathertheincomegapbetweentherich,marginalandsmallfarmershasincreased.Moreover,notallpartsofthecountrywerebenefitted.Allthecropscouldnotreapthebenefitsofgreenrevolutionexceptriceandwjjeat.Moreover,therevolutiontookoffwithagreatstartbutitcouldnotsustainitsgrowthrateandproductivityrateoverthesubsequentyears.
Thegreenrevolutionhadsomedisadvantagestoo.Itledtoachangeindietaryhabits,asfewerpeoplewereaffectedbyhungeranddiedfromstarvation,manywereaffectedbymalnutritionsuchasironorvitamin-Adeficiencies.Nutritionalcontentoftheproductsthusyieldedwerequestioned.Alsotheconsumptionofthepesticidesusedtokillpestsbyhumansinsomecasesmayhaveincreasedthelikelihoodofcancer.Poorfarmingpracticesincludingnon-compliancetousageofmasksandover-usageofthechemicalscompoundedthissituation.
