TheGreenRevolutiondescribesarapidincreaseintheproductionofcropsrangingfromwheattorice.Itledtoaboomintheagricultureindustry.ItwasthetechnologicalresponsetoaworldwidefoodshortagewhichbecamethreateningintheperiodaftertheWorldWarII.

ThebeginningsoftheGreenRevolutionareoftenattributedtoNormanBorlaug,anAmericanscientistinterestedinagriculture.Heisknownasthe‘FatheroftheGreenRevolution’.Heiscreditedwithsavingoverabillionpeoplefromstarvation.Hedevelopednewdiseaseresistancehigh-yieldvarietiesofwheat.

Bycombininghiswheatvarietieswithnewmechanisedagriculturaltechnologies,Mexicowasabletoproducemorewheatthanwasneededbyitsowncitizens,leadingtoitsbecominganexporterofwheatbythe1960s.Priortothis,thecountrywasimportingalmosthalfofitswheatsupply.

InIndia,theseedsofgreenrevolutionwerefirsttestedduringthedroughtof1964-65.M.S.SwaminathananIndiangeneticist,isknownas‘FatherofIndianGreenRevolution’forhisleadershipandsuccessinintroducingandfurtherdevelopinghigh-yieldingvarietiesofwheatinIndia.TheseseedswereplantedindifferentsoilsofPunjab,Delhi,PusaandKanpur.

Theyieldwasover4,000kgperhectarewhichwasapproximatelyaboutfourtimestheyieldoflocalvarieties.Thesevarietieswerethenreplicatedforpubliccultivation.Highyieldingvarietiesprogrammewasintroducedinthekharifseasonof1966.StateslikePunjab,HaryanaandWesternUttarPradeshreapedthebenefitsofthegreenrevolutioninwheat,whileproductionofriceincreasedinthestatesofAndhraPradeshandTamilNadu.

TherearearoundtwelvecomponentsofGreenRevolutionsuchashighyieldingvarietiesofseeds(HYV),irrigation–surfaceandground,useofchemicalfertilisers,insecticidesandpesticides,CommandAreaDevelopment(CAD),landreforms,consolidationofholdings,supplyofagriculturalcredit,electrificationofruralareas,constructionofroadsandmarkets,farmmechanismanddevelopmentofagriculturaluniversities.

Thesecomponentsdonotworkinisolation.Infactitistheconsolidateddevelopmentofallthesecomponentsthatresultintheoveralldevelopment.GreenRevolutionhasinfluencedIndianEconomytoalargeextent.Onemajorproblemliesinthefactthattherevolutiondidnotspreadevenlytoallthepartsofthecountry.

WiththeintroductionofGreenRevolutionin1967-68,therewasaphenomenalincreaseintheproductionoffoodgrains,especiallythewheat.Thus,GreenRevolutioninIndiacanbeexclusivelycalledwheatrevolution.GreenRevolutionincreasedproductionthusbringingprosperitytothefarmers.Theincreasedproductionwithinthecountrymadethecountryself-sufficientandself-reliantinfoodgrains.Thisledtoaconsiderabledecreaseinthequantityofimport.Infact,nowmanyatimesweareinapositiontoexport.

Withtheuseofmechanisedandscientificmethodsinfarming,industriestoosprangup.Tractors,harvesters,threshers,electricalmotors,dieselengines,pumpsetcbegantobemanufacturedonalargescale.Besidesdemandsforpesticides,fertilisers,insecticidesincreasedthenumberoffertiliserplantsinthecountry.Consequently,therewereincreasedemploymentopportunities,especiallyintheruralareas.

Eventhough,GreenRevolutionturnedouttobeauniqueeventinthehistoryofIndependentIndiabyresolvingtheproblemsofhunger,famineandstarvation,yetithadcertaindemerits.GreenRevolutionhasgreatlyprofitedtherichfarmersbuthasfailedtoprofitthesmallerones.Rathertheincomegapbetweentherich,marginalandsmallfarmershasincreased.Moreover,notallpartsofthecountrywerebenefitted.Allthecropscouldnotreapthebenefitsofgreenrevolutionexceptriceandwjjeat.Moreover,therevolutiontookoffwithagreatstartbutitcouldnotsustainitsgrowthrateandproductivityrateoverthesubsequentyears.

Thegreenrevolutionhadsomedisadvantagestoo.Itledtoachangeindietaryhabits,asfewerpeoplewereaffectedbyhungeranddiedfromstarvation,manywereaffectedbymalnutritionsuchasironorvitamin-Adeficiencies.Nutritionalcontentoftheproductsthusyieldedwerequestioned.Alsotheconsumptionofthepesticidesusedtokillpestsbyhumansinsomecasesmayhaveincreasedthelikelihoodofcancer.Poorfarmingpracticesincludingnon-compliancetousageofmasksandover-usageofthechemicalscompoundedthissituation.

Therearevaryingopinionsabouttheeffectofthegreenrevolutiononwildbiodiversity.Landdegradationandsoilnutrientsdepletionhaveforcedfarmerstoclearupformerlyforestedareasinordertokeepupwithproduction.Moreover,mosthighintensityagriculturalproductionishighlyreliantonnon-renewableresources.Agriculturalmachineryandtransport,aswellastheproductionofpesticidesandnitratesalldependonfossilfuels.Theessentialmineralnutrientphosphorusisoftenalimitingfactorincropcultivation,whilethephosphorusminesarerapidlybeingdepletedworldwide.Thefailuretodepartfromthesenon-sustainableagriculturalproductionmethodscouldpotentiallyleadtoalargescalecollapseofthecurrentsystemofintensivefoodproductionwithinthiscentury.
