Tothinkpositivelyaboutourprospects,wemustfirstbeabletoimagineourselvesinthefuture.Optimismstartswithwhatmaybethemostextraordinaryofhumantalents:

mentaltimetravel,theabilitytomovebackandforththroughtimeandspaceinone'

smind.Althoughmostofustakethisabilityforgranted,ourcapacitytoenvisionadifferenttimeandplaceisinfactcriticaltooursurvival.

Itiseasytoseewhycognitive(认知的,认识的)timetravelwasnaturallyselectedforoverthecourseofevolution.Itallowsustoplanahead,tosavefoodandresourcesfortimesofscarcity(缺乏,不足,匮乏,萧条,稀少)andtoendurehardworkinanticipationofafuturereward.Italsoletsusforecasthowourcurrentbehaviormayinfluencefuturegenerations.Ifwewerenotabletopicturetheworldinahundredyearsormore,wouldwebeconcernedwithglobalwarming?
