Nothingmuchhappenedin1939butinearly1940theGermanarmystartedtoinvadeFranceandBelgium.TheFrenchandBritisharmiesweresurprisedbythefastwayinwhichtheGermansfoughtandhadtomoveback...FrancewasbeatenandtheBritisharmyretreatedtoasmallbeachinFrancecalledDunkirk.Thebeachwastoosmalltoallowbigshipstotakethemensoamassofsmallboats(lessthan10mlong)cameacrosstheEnglishChannelandpickedthemenoffthebeach.Over380,000menwererescuedalthoughalmostnoneoftheirgunsandequipmentwassaved.WinstonChurchillwasthePrimeMinisterofBritainandsaidthattheBattleofEuropewasover--thenextwouldbetheBattleofBritain.
