Thereisnodoubtthatthegovernmentistheagencythatshouldplaytheleadingrolesinsolvingtheenvironmentalproblems.Tobeginwith,withthepowertocollecttaxesfromindividualcitizensandprivatecompanies,thegovernmenthavethefinancialresourcesthatarenecessarytodealwithenvironmentalissues.Inaddition,thegovernmentmayformulatepoliciestoprovideincentivesforthecompaniesandindividualstoreducetheamountofpollutioncausedbytheiractivities.Finally,thegovernmentistheonlyinstitutionthatmayenactlawsrelatedtoenvironmentalproblems.

Ontheotherhand,withoutthecooperationandparticipationofindividualcitizensandprivatecompanies,thegovernment'

seffortstoprotecttheenvironmentwouldnotbeeffective.Forexample,thegovernmentmaylaunchacampaigntoeducatethepublicaboutthedesirabilityofdrivingcompactcarsforreducingtheairpollution.Thecampaignwouldmakelittledifferenceiftheindividualspaylittleattentiontotheinformationordonotcareabouttheenvironmentatall.Norwouldthegovernment'

sgoalbeachievedifthecarmanufacturersdonotproducemorecompactcarsforthemarket.Inotherwords,thegovernmentalonecannotsolvetheproblemofenvironment.Ittakesthecollaborativeeffortsfromindividualandcorporatecitizenstoimprovethesituation.

Inconclusion,Iagreethatthegovernmentshouldtaketheresponsibilitytoleadthesocietyinaddressingtheproblemsofenvironmentalpollutionasithasthepowerandresourcesnecessarytodoso.Nonetheless,individualcitizensandprivatecompanieshavetobeengagedifthegovernmentistoaccomplishanything.

Nowadaysthemediaoftencovernewsofcrimessuchasmurder,rapeandarmedrobberyingreatdetails.Whilesuchinformationmaywarnthepublicofthepotentialdangerandhelpreducecrimes,providingtoomuchinformationaboutcrimesmightleadtocertainnegativesideeffects.Inmyopinion,theinformationaboutcrimesshouldbemadeaccessibletothepublicbutthemediashouldrefrainfromreportingcrimesinanirresponsiblemanner.

Tobeginwith,thereisnodoubtthatpeopleshouldhavetherighttoinformationaboutcrimescommittedinacommunity.Ifsomeoneintheneighbourhoodweremurdered,thechanceofotherpeoplebeingkilledwouldalsoincrease.Thepeopleshouldbenotifiedoftheeventaswellasanyactionstheauthoritieshadtakenimmediately.Anyattemptstoblockthenewsaboutthecrimeswouldviolatepeople'

srighttoknowthetruth.Yet,thenecessityofinformingthepublicdoesnotmeanfulldetailshavetobedisclosed.

Admittedly,thebestwaytoalertthepublicaboutarecentcrimebeingcommittedisthroughthereportingbythemedia.MostofusreadnewspaperandwatchTVnewseveryday.Butthereareanumberofreasonswhythemediashouldonlyreportthecrimesbrieflyandletanyinterestedpartiesfollowupwiththeeventsbythemselves.Tobeginwith,thedetailsofthecrimesmaycausediscomfortandevenpanicamongthemembersofthepublic.Thisisparticularlytruefortheyoungchildreninthesociety.Inaddition,thetimeonTVandthespaceonthenewspaperarescarceresourcesthatcanbeutilizedinmanydifferentways.Therefore,thedetailedreportingofthecrimeswouldincurhighopportunitycostsasthepublicattentionwouldhavebeendirectedtootherimportantissuessuchaseducationandenvironment.Finally,thefullinformationaboutcrimesmaybemadeavailablethroughthepoliceorothergovernmentagenciessothatanyoneinterestedintheeventsmayconsulttherecords.Sucharrangementwouldbelesscostlycomparedtoreportingthedetailsviathemedia.

Inconclusion,peoplewhochoosetoimmigratetoadifferentcountrymayfacegreatchallengesandopportunitiesastheyadapttothenewenvironment.Itistruethattheyneedtomaketheeffortstolearnthenewrulesandcultureofthehostcountry.Buttheyshouldalsobeencouragedtoretaintheirownculturesandlifestylesasnewmembersofamorediversesociety.

Modernmedicaltechnologiesandhealthcaresystemshavesignificantlyincreasedthelifeexpectancyofpeoplearoundtheworld.Unfortunately,however,theelderlypeople,whileenjoyinglongerlives,donotalwaysgettherespecttheydeservefromthesociety.Therearemanyfactorscausingthisphenomenon.Inthisessay,Iwouldfocusonthelackofcommunicationbetweentheelderlypeopleandothermembersofthesocietyandproposeafewpossiblesolutionstoaddresstheissues.

Themainreasonwhytheelderlyarenotwellrespectedisthattheyoftenfailtocommunicatewithothermembersinthesocietyeffectively.Astheyretireandleavetheirjobpositions,theylosetheopportunitiestogetthemostup-to-dateinformationondifferentaspectsoflife.Theyoftenfinditdifficulttotalkwithyoungerpeoplewhoaremorefamiliarwiththelatestdevelopmentofthesociety.Inaddition,theyoungerpeopleoftencommunicatewithoneanotherusingthelastesttechnologiessuchasmobilephonesSMS(shortmessagesservices),e-mailandinstantmessengers.Oncetheyoungerpeoplegetusedtothesenewgadgets,theylosethepatiencetotalktotheelderlyface-to-face.
