Newerdevelopmentsinregenerativemedicineincludegrowingnewskininalaboratoryandusingittohelppeoplewhohavebeenhurtinfiresoraccidents.Anotherexampleofregenerativemedicineisatechniquedevelopedfromstudyingfrogsandmice.Whencellsareold,likeinadults,theycan’tchangewhattheydoinourbodies.Forexample,askincellcan’tchangeintoaneyecell.Butwhencellsareveryyoung,theycanbecomeanycelltype.Theseyoungcellsarecalledstemcells,anddoctorscanusethemtogrowanytypeoftissue,suchasskin,heartoreye.JohnGurdonandShinyaYamanakawonthe2012NobelPrizefortheirstudiesinthisarea.

ProfessorFionaWatt,fromtheCentreofRegenerativeMedicineatKing’sCollege,London,believesthatregenerativemedicineissoexcitingbecausemanydifferentkindsofexpertsneedtoworktogether.3Dprintersmaybeusedtoprintnewbonesbyexperts,whoneedtoworkcloselywithuniversityscientistsandthesurgeonswhodotheoperationsinhospitals.
