WorkontheLongPenbeganinAtwood’sbasement（地下室）.Atfirst,theyhadnoideaitwouldbeashardasitturnedouttobe.Thedevicewentthroughseveralversions,includingonethatactuallyhadsmokecomingoutofit.Theinventingfinallycompleted,testrunsweremadeinOttawa,andtheLongPenwasofficiallylaunchedatthe2006LondonBookFair.Fromhere,AtwoodconductedtwotransatlanticbooksigningsofherlatestbookforfansinTorontoandNewYorkCity.

TheLongPenproducesauniquesignatureeachtimebecauseitcopiesthemovementoftheauthorinrealtime.Ithasseveralotherpotentialapplications.Itcouldincreasecreditcardsecurityandallowpeopletosigncontractsfromanotherprovince.ThevideoexchangebetweensignerandreceivercanberecordedonDVDforproofwhenlegaldocumentsareused.

“It’sreallyfun,”saidtheownerofabookstore,whowaspresentforoneofthetestruns.“Obviouslyyoucan’tshakehandswiththeauthorbuttherearechancesforaconnectionthatyou

don’tgetfromaregularbooksigning.”
