TheSpaceXDemo-2mission,thefirstmannedspaceflightlaunchedfromAmericansoilsinceNASAretiredtheShuttleprogramin2011,isalsothefirsteveroperatedbyacommercialprovider.ThetwoNASAastronauts,BobBehnkenandDougHurley,wentontosuccessfullydocktheCrewDragoncapsulewiththeISSonSundaymorning.Whilethemissionwon’tbeconsideredacompletesuccessuntilBehnkenandHurleyaresafelyhome,thereturnofmannedspaceflighttoAmericasignalssomebigshiftsinthemonthsandyearsahead.Oneofthemostimmediateimpacts—Russia’smonopoly(垄断)onastronautaccesstospaceisover.

Since2011,NASAhasbeenpurchasingseatsaboardRussia’sSoyuzspacecrafttoshuttleastronautstotheISS.Whileseatsstartedoutataround$21millioneachatfirst,they’vesinceballoonedtoareported$90millionforafall2020launch.Incomparison,accordingtoNASA’sinspectorgeneral,theper-seatcostofSpaceXflightsisaround$55million.“ItisanightmarescenariofortheRussianspaceagency,”oneindustryexpertsaid.“We’rebuildingareplacementtoeveryrocketandspacecrafttheyprovide.”

Thedeathscomeamong reportsofovercrowding onthepopularmountain.TheNepaligovernmentgrantedatotalof381permitstoclimbEverestthisyear,anumberthatdoesn’tincludeguideswhoareonthemountainaswell.Forsomeclimbers,thattraffichasmeantlongerwaittimes—some toldtheHimalayanTimes thewaithasexceededtwohoursbetweenthelastcampandthepeak.MountaineerVanessaO’Brien,whohasalsoclimbedthesevensummits,saidwhenthere’sacrowd,beingamoreexperiencedclimberwon’thelpyou.“Itdoesn’tmatterifyou’rethebestracecardriverintheworld.Ifyou’restuckintraffic,you’restuckintraffic,”shesaidinaninterview.

Andwhenaclimberisstuckinthattraffic,“theirbodyisstartingtodeteriorate.”O’Brien,whosetarecordasthefastestwomantoreachthehighestpeakoneverycontinent,alsosaidthedescentisoftenharderthantheclimb.

ClimbingexpertAlanArnettesaidthere’snosimpleexplanationforthestringofdeaths.Hesaidweatherthathasledtoashorterclimbingseasonisonefactorcausingovercrowding.HealsosaidthecosttoclimbMountEveresthasdecreased,whichmeansmorepeoplearemakingthejourney.Heurgedthegovernmentsinchargeofgrantingpermitstolimithowmanypeoplecanbeonthemountainatonce.

Still,Christopherwasnobeginner.Hisfamilysaidhe’dbeenmountainclimbingforfivedecades.Hearrivedatthebasecampnearlytwomonthsbeforehisclimbsohecouldgivehimselftimetoadapttotheconditions.Whenhemadehisjourney,hisfamilysaidhewasclimbingwithasmallgroupinalmostidealconditionsaftersomeoftheovercrowdinghadcleared.
