I.PURPOSEANDSCOPE
Thisstandardspecifiesrequirementsforsocialaccountabilitytoenableacompanyto:
a)develop,maintain,andenforcepoliciesandproceduresinordertomanagethoseissueswhichitcancontrolorinfluence;
b)demonstratetointerestedpartiesthatpolicies,proceduresandpracticesareinconformitywiththerequirementsofthisstandard.
Therequirementsofthisstandardshallapplyuniversallywithregardtogeographiclocation,industrysectorandcompanysize.

ReadersareadvisedtoconsulttheSA8000GuidanceDocumentforinterpretativeguidancewithrespecttothisstandard.
II.NORMATIVEELEMENTSANDTHEIR
INTERPRETATION
Thecompanyshallcomplywithnationalandotherapplicablelaw,otherrequirementstowhichthecompanysubscribes,andthisstandard.Whennationalandotherapplicablelaw,otherrequirementstowhichthecompanysubscribes,andthisstandardaddressthesameissue,thatprovisionwhichismoststringentapplies.

III.DEFINITIONS
1.Definitionofcompany:
Theentiretyofanyorganizationorbusinessentityresponsibleforimplementingtherequirementsofthisstandard,includingallpersonnel(i.e.,directors,executives,management,supervisors,andnon?
managementstaff,whetherdirectlyemployed,contractedorotherwiserepresentingthecompany).
2.Definitionofsupplier/subcontractor:
Abusinessentitywhichprovidesthecompanywithgoodsand/orservicesintegralto,andutilizedin/for,theproductionofthecompany'
sgoodsand/orservices.
3.Definitionofsub-supplier:
Abusinessentityinthesupplychainwhich,directlyorindirectly,providesthesupplierwithgoodsand/orservicesintegralto,andutilizedin/for,theproductionofthesupplier'
sand/orcompany'
4.Definitionofremedialaction:
Actiontakentomakeamendstoaworkerorformeremployeeforapreviousviolationofaworker'
srightsascoveredbySA8000.
5.Definitionofcorrectiveaction:
Theimplementationofasystemicchangeorsolutiontoensureanimmediateandongoingremedytoanonconformance.
6.Definitionofinterestedparty:
Individualorgroupconcernedwithoraffectedbythesocialperformanceofthecompany.
7.Definitionofchild:
Anypersonlessthan15yearsofage,unlesslocalminimumagelawstipulatesahigherageforworkormandatoryschooling,inwhichcasethehigheragewouldapply.If,however,localminimumagelawissetat14yearsofageinaccordancewithdeveloping?
countryexceptionsunderILOConvention138,theloweragewillapply.
8.Definitionofyoungworker:
Anyworkerovertheageofachildasdefinedaboveandundertheageof18.
9.Definitionofchildlabour:
Anyworkbyachildyoungerthantheage(s)specifiedintheabovedefinitionofachild,exceptasprovidedforbyILORecommendation146.
10.Definitionofforcedlabour:
Allworkorservicethatisextractedfromanypersonunderthemenaceofanypenaltyforwhichsaidpersonhasnotofferedhim/herselfvoluntarilyorforwhichsuchworkorserviceisdemandedasameansofrepaymentofdebt.
11.Definitionofremediationofchildren:
Allnecessarysupportandactionstoensurethesafety,health,education,anddevelopmentofchildrenwhohavebeensubjectedtochildlabour,asdefinedabove,andaredismissed.
12.Definitionofhomeworker:
Apersonwhocarriesoutworkforacompanyunderdirectorindirectcontract,otherthanonacompany'
spremises,forremuneration,whichresultsintheprovisionofaproductorserviceasspecifiedbytheemployer,irrespectiveofwhosuppliestheequipment,materialsorotherinputsused.
IV.SOCIALACCOUNTABILITYREQUIREMENTS
1.CHILDLABOUR
Criteria:
1.1Thecompanyshallnotengageinorsupporttheuseofchildlabourasdefinedabove.
1.2Thecompanyshallestablish,document,maintain,andeffectivelycommunicatetopersonnelandotherinterestedpartiespoliciesandproceduresforremediationofchildrenfoundtobeworkinginsituationswhichfitthedefinitionofchildlabourabove,andshallprovideadequatesupporttoenablesuchchildrentoattendandremaininschooluntilnolongerachildasdefinedabove.
1.3Thecompanyshallestablish,document,maintain,andeffectivelycommunicatetopersonnelandotherinterestedpartiespoliciesandproceduresforpromotionofeducationforchildrencoveredunderILORecommendation146andyoungworkerswhoaresubjecttolocalcompulsoryeducationlawsorareattendingschool,includingmeanstoensurethatnosuchchildoryoungworkerisemployedduringschoolhoursandthatcombinedhoursofdailytransportation(toandfromworkandschool),school,andworktimedoesnotexceed10hoursaday.
1.4Thecompanyshallnotexposechildrenoryoungworkerstosituationsinoroutsideoftheworkplacethatarehazardous,unsafe,orunhealthy.
2.FORCEDLABOUR
Criterion:
2.1Thecompanyshallnotengageinorsupporttheuseofforcedlabour,norshallpersonnelberequiredtolodge'
deposits'
oridentitypapersuponcommencingemploymentwiththecompany.
3.HEALTHANDSAFETY
3.1Thecompany,bearinginmindtheprevailingknowledgeoftheindustryandofanyspecifichazards,shallprovideasafeandhealthyworkingenvironmentandshalltakeadequatestepstopreventaccidentsandinjurytohealtharisingoutof,associatedwithoroccurringinthecourseofwork,byminimizing,sofarasisreasonablypracticable,thecausesofhazardsinherentintheworkingenvironment.
3.2Thecompanyshallappointaseniormanagementrepresentativeresponsibleforthehealthandsafetyofallpersonnel,andaccountablefortheimplementationoftheHealthandSafetyelementsofthisstandard.
3.3Thecompanyshallensurethatallpersonnelreceiveregularandrecordedhealthandsafetytraining,andthatsuchtrainingisrepeatedfornewandreassignedpersonnel.
3.4Thecompanyshallestablishsystemstodetect,avoidorrespondtopotentialthreatstothehealthandsafetyofallpersonnel.
3.5Thecompanyshallprovide,forusebyallpersonnel,cleanbathrooms,accesstopotablewater,and,ifappropriate,sanitaryfacilitiesforfoodstorage.
3.6Thecompanyshallensurethat,ifprovidedforpersonnel,dormitoryfacilitiesareclean,safe,andmeetthebasicneedsofthepersonnel.
4.FREEDOMOFASSOCIATION&
RIGHTTO
COLLECTIVEBARGAINING
4.1Thecompanyshallrespecttherightofallpersonneltoformandjointradeunionsoftheirchoiceandtobargaincollectively.
4.2Thecompanyshall,inthosesituationsinwhichtherighttofreedomofassociationandcollectivebargainingarerestrictedunderlaw,facilitateparallelmeansofindependentandfreeassociationandbargainingforallsuchpersonnel.
4.3Thecompanyshallensurethatrepresentativesofsuchpersonnelarenotthesubjectofdiscriminati
