Thepicnics,speechesandparadesoftoday’sLaborDaywereallpartofthefirstcelebrationheldinNewYorkCityin1882.ItspromoterwasanIrish-AmericanlaborleadernamedPeterJ.McGuire.Acarpenterbytrade,McGuirehadworkedsincetheageof11,andin1882waspresidentoftheUnitedBrotherhoodofCarpentersandJoiners(UBCJ).
