Anditmeansreinstatingthepay-as-you-gorulethatwefollowedduringthe1990s–soifwewanttospend,we’llneedtofindsomewhereelsetocut.
AndthisMonday,atmyfirst,fullCabinetmeeting,Iwillaskallofmydepartmentandagencyheadsforspecificproposalsforcuttingtheirbudgets.
Already,membersofmyCabinethavebeguntotrimbackunnecessaryexpenditures16.
SecretaryNapolitano,forexample,isendingconsultingcontractstocreatenewsealsandlogosthathavecosttheDepartmentofHomelandSecurity$3millionsince2003.
InthelargestDepartment,SecretaryGateshaslaunchedanhistoricprojecttoreformdefense17contractingproceduresandeliminatehundredsofbillionsofdollarsinwastefulspendingandcostoverruns.
AndIcommendSenatorsMcCainandLevin–aRepublicanandaDemocrat18–whohaveteameduptoleadthiseffortinCongress.
Finally,inthecomingweeks,Iwillbeannouncingtheelimination19ofdozensofgovernmentprogramsshowntobewastefulorineffective.
Inthiseffort,therewillbenosacredcows,andnopetprojects.
AllacrossAmerica,familiesaremakinghardchoices,andit’stimetheirgovernmentdidthesame.
ThatiswhyIhaveassembledateamofmanagement,technology,andbudgetexpertstoguideusinthiswork–leaderswhowillhelpusrevampgovernmentoperationsfromtoptobottomandensurethatthefederalgovernmentistrulyworkingfortheAmericanpeople.
