Theprojectisthengeneratedfromacirculationdiagramthataspirestoeliminatethelinearstructurecharacteristicofpiers,andthedirectionalityofthecirculation."

Theprojectstartswithwhatthearchitectshavenamedasthe"

no-returnpier"

withtheambitiontostructuretheprecinctofthepierasafluid,uninterruptedandmulti-directionalspace,ratherthanagatewaytoflowsoffixedorientation.Aseriesofprogrammaticallyspecificinterlockingcirculationloopsallowthearchitectstosubvertthetraditionallinearandbranchingstructurecharacteristicofthebuilding.Ratherthandevelopingthebuildingasanobjectorfigureonthepier,theprojectisproducedasanextensionoftheurbanground,constructedasasystematictransformationofthelinesofthecirculationdiagramintoafoldedandbifurcatedsurface.Thesefoldsproducecoveredsurfaceswherethedifferentpartsoftheprogramcanbehosted.

Therelationbetweentheskinandtheareasestablishedbythestructuralfoldsofthesurfaceisoneofthemostimportantargumentsoftheprojectinthatthefoldedgrounddistributestheloadsthroughthesurfacesthemselves,movingthemdiagonallytotheground.ThisstructureisalsoespeciallyadequateincopingwiththelateralforcesgeneratedbyseismicmovementsthataffecttheJapanesetopography.

Thearticulationofthecirculationsystemwiththeconstructivesystemthroughthisfoldedorganisationproducedtwodistinctspatialqualities;

thecontinuityoftheexteriorandtheinteriorspacesandthecontinuitybetweenthedifferentlevelsofthebuilding.

Thearchitectshaveusedaveryreducedpaletteofmaterialsanddetailsinordertoexplorefurtherthecontinuityproducedbythetopography.Singlefinishesextendontheupperorlowersideofthetopographyregardlessofexteriororinteriorcondition.

Allsecondarysystemthatareappliedtothesteeltopography,mainlywood-deckflooringsystem,glazingsystemandfencing/handrailsystemuseasingledetailalongthelengthofthebuildingandonlyvarytoexplorethegeometricalvariationacrossspaces.Theambitionwastoconstructcontinuousbutdifferentiatedspacesalongthelengthofthepier.
