vetalkedalotaboutyourgovernment'
responsibilitforsettinghighstandards,andsupportingteacherandprincipals,andturningaroundschoolthataren'

tgettingtheopportunitiethatthedeserve.
butattheendoftheday,wecanhavethemostdedicatedteachers,themostsupportiveparents,thebestschoolintheworld--andnoneofitwillmakeadifference,noneofitwillmatterunlesallofyoufulfillyourresponsibilities,unlesyoushowuptothoseschools,unlesyoupaattentiontothoseteachers,unlesyoulistentoyourparentandgrandparentandotheradultandputinthehardworkittaketosucceed.that'

theresponsibiliteachofyouhaforyoureducation.
iwanttostartwiththeresponsibilityouhavetoyourself.eversingleoneofyouhasomethingthatyou'
regoodat.eversingleoneofyouhasomethingtooffer.andyouhavearesponsibilittoyourselftodiscoverwhatthatis.that'

maybeyoucouldbeagreatwriter--maybeevengoodenoughtowriteabookorarticleinanewspaper--butyoumightnotknowituntilyouwritethatenglishpaper--thatenglishclaspaperthat'

tjustimportantforyourownlifeandyourownfuture.whatyoumakeofyoureducationwilldecidenothinglesthanthefutureofthicountry.thefutureofamericadependonyou.whatyou'
relearninginschooltodawilldeterminewhetherweaanationcanmeetourgreatestchallengeinthefuture.

llneedtheknowledgeandproblem-solvingskillyoulearninscienceandmathtocurediseaselikecancerandaids,andtodevelopnewenergtechnologieandprotectourenvironment.you'
llneedtheinsightandcritical-thinkingskillyougaininhistorandsocialstudietofightpovertandhomelessness,crimeanddiscrimination,andmakeournationmorefairandmorefree.you'
llneedthecreativitandingenuityoudevelopinallyourclassetobuildnewcompaniethatwillcreatenewjobandboostoureconomy.

mnotproudof,andigotinmoretroublethanishouldhave.andmlifecouldhaveeasiltakenaturnfortheworse.
butiwa--iwalucky.igotalotofsecondchances,andihadtheopportunittogotocollegeandlawschoolandfollowmdreams.mwife,ourfirstladmichelleobama,shehaasimilarstory.neitherofherparenthadgonetocollege,andthedidn'
thavealotofmoney.buttheworkedhard,andsheworkedhard,sothatshecouldgotothebestschoolinthicountry.
someofyoumightnothavethoseadvantages.maybeyoudon'
thaveadultinyourlifewhogiveyouthesupportthatyouneed.maybesomeoneinyourfamilhalosttheirjoandthere'
notenoughmonetogoaround.maybeyouliveinaneighborhoodwhereyoudon'
tfeelsafe,orhavefriendwhoarepressuringyoutodothingyouknowaren'

butattheendoftheday,thecircumstanceofyourlife--whatyoulooklike,whereyoucomefrom,howmuchmoneyouhave,whatyou'
vegotgoingonathome--noneofthatianexcuseforneglectingyourhomeworkorhavingabadattitudeinschool.that'
noexcusefortalkingbacktoyourteacher,orcuttingclass,ordroppingoutofschool.thereinoexcusefornottrying.
