TothepiousPuritan,thephysical,phenomenalworldisnothingbutasymbolofGod.Physicallifewassimultaneouslyspiritual;

everypassageoflife,enmeshedinthevastcontextofGod’splan,possessedadelegatedmeaning.ThismetaphoricalmodeofperceptionwaschieflyinstrumentalincallingintobeingaliterarysymbolismwhichisdistinctlyAmerican.Puritandoctrineandliterarypracticecontributedtothedevelopmentofanindigenoussymbolism.ToHawthorne,Melville,Howellsandmanyothers,symbolismasatechniquehasbecomeacommonpractice.

c.Simplicity

SimplicitycharacterizesthePuritanstyleofwriting.Thestyleoftheirwritingisfresh,simpleanddirect;

therhetoricisplainandhonest,notwithoutatouchofnobilityoftentraceabletothedirectinfluenceoftheBible.AllthishasleftanindelibleimprintonAmericanwriting.

ThetransitionalliteratureisrepresentedbytranslationsofthegreatIndianoratorsofthe19thcenturyandmemoirsoftheIndianexperienceinrelationtowhitedominance.TheywererelatedbyIndianstowhiteaudiences.

Themodernliteratureincludesnovels,shortstories,andpoetrywritteninEnglishbynativeAmericansofthe19thand20thcenturies,mostofwhomspeaknootherlanguage.ForsomereasontherearemoregoodIndianpoetsthanfictionwriterstoday.Thesenatural-bornpoetsaregiftedwithcolorfulimaginationandtheabilitytoexpressinsonorous,musicalwordstheirimpressionoflifeandnature.
