IntheUnitedStates84collegesnowacceptjustwomen.Mostofthemwereestablishedinthe19thcentury;theyweredesignedtoofferwomentheeducationtheycouldnotreceiveanywhereelse.Atthattimemajoruniversitiesandcollegesacceptedonlymen.Inthepast20yearsmanyyoungwomenhavechosentostudyatcollegesthatacceptbothmenandwomen.Asaresultsomewomen'scollegesdecidedtoacceptmenstudentstoo.Others,however,refusedtochange.Nowtheseschoolsarepopularagain.

ThepresidentofTrinityCollegeinWashington,D.C.saidthatbytheendofthe1980swomenbegantorecognizethatstudyingatthesameschoolwithmendidnotmeanwomenwerehavinganequalchancetolearn.ThepresidentofSmithCollegeinMassachusettssaysawomen'scollegepermitswomentochooseclassesandactivitiesfreely.Forexample,shesaysthatinawomen'scollegeahigherpercentageofstudentsstudiesmathematicsthaninacollegewithbothmenandwomen.
