Allofusareinvolvedwithpersonalrelationships.Someofthesearerelatedtofamily,somewithfellowstudentsorworkers,andothersofavarietyoftypes.Mostofthesearehappy,positiverelationships,butnotallofthem,thoughwemightwishitwerenotso.

Tohaveapositiverelationshipapersonmustinvesttimeandinterestintheotherpeoplewithwhomweareassociated.Weallunderstandthatourfeelingsandinterestinotherpeopledependsomewhatonwhatwehaveincommon,ouruniquepersonalities,andtheassociationsinwhichwefindourselves.

Inmostsocietiesgoodrelationshipsarevaluedbecauseindividualswhohavegoodrelationshipsarehappier,moreproductiveworkers,andaresimplymorefuntobewithandworkwith.However,relationshipscanvarywidelyonthetimeandinterestinvolved.Wecertainlymaypreferthosepersonswithwhomwecanbe“goodfriends,”“buddies,”or“valuedcolleagues.”InWesternculturesthereareseveralmeaningsofthewordLOVE,whichtellusthenatureofdifferentpersonalrelationships.Theseareusuallywellunderstoodbyindividualsinthesesocieties,butnotnecessarilybypeoplewhoarefromdifferentcultures.
