Dhurandharcontinuedstudyingthephenomenon.HesoonrealisedthatanimalsinfectedwiththecommoncoldvirusAd-36gainedweight.Whenhetestedhistheoryonmorethan500people,hefoundthat30%oftheobesesubjectstestedhadbeenexposedtotheAd-36viruscomparedwithonly11%ofthinindividuals.Sincethen,follow-upstudiesbyotherresearchershaveproducedsimilarfindings.
“Wethinkthevirusinfectsfatcells,causingthemtodivideandgrowfasterthannormal,”explainsDhurandhar.Theadvantageisthatthevirusappearstoimproveblood-sugarlevels.“Yourbodymayproducemorefatcells,butthatmeansthere’slessfatlefttotraveltoyourliverandblood,”saysDhurandhar.Thismayhelpexplainwhysomeoverweightpeoplearelesslikelytohaveheartdiseasethanthinnerones.Whileheacknowledgesthatthevirusisn’tthesinglecauseofobesity,itmayexplainwhysomepeoplestruggletoloseweight.“Ifyoudohavetheobesityvirus,itdoesn’tmeanyou’reunabletoloseweight-itjustmeansyou’llhavetoworkalotharder,”Dhurandharexplains.
