Obviouslyitwouldbeevenbetterfortheenvironmentifeveryonejuststoppedsmoking,butthestatisticsshowthatalthoughtherehasbeenanincreaseinanti-smokingadsandmessaging,between2000and2014,globalsalesofcigarettesincreasedby8percent,andawholelotofthosecigaretteendsareendingupastrash.Sincemostofourlittereventuallyendsupinwaterways,cigaretteendscansurelypollutethesurroundingenvironment.“Itonlytakesasinglecigaretteendtopollutealiterofwater,”TerraCyclefounder,TomSzaky,said.“Animalscanalsomistakelitteredcigaretteendsforfood.”

TerraCycledoesthisbyfirstbreakingthemdownintoseparateparts.Theymixtheremainingmaterials,suchasthetobaccoandthepaper,withotherkindsofrubbish;

anduseitonnon-agriculturalland,suchasgolfcourses.Thefilters(过滤嘴)arealittleharder.Torecyclethese,TerraCyclefirstmakesthemleanandcutsthemintosmallpieces,andthencombinesthemwithotherrecycledmaterials,makingthemintoliquidforindustrialplasticproducts.
