BorninScotland,GilbertHighetisbestknownasamid-20th-centuryteacherofthehumanitiesintheUnitedStates.HeattendedGlasgowUniversityandBalliolCollege,Oxford,becomingafellowofStJohn'
sCollege,Oxfordin1932,whereheremainedforsixyears.In1938hewasappointedtothechairofLatin&
GreekatColumbiaUniversity.HebecameanAmericancitizenin1951,followinghisappointmentasAnthonProfessorofLatinLanguageandLiteraturein1950.SeehisobituaryinTheTimes,January26,1978.
Highetdevotedmostofhisenergytoteaching,buthealsoaspiredtoraisethelevelofmasscultureandachievedbroaderinfluencebypublishingessaysandbooks,hostinghisownradioprogram,actingasajudgefortheBook-of-the-MonthClub,andservingontheeditorialboardofHorizonmagazine.
2.Diogenes
(412B.C.—324B.C.),GreekphilosopherwhofoundedtheCynicschoolofphilosophy,stressingself-controlandthepursuitofvirtue.HewasthesonofHicesias,whowasexiledfromhishometownofSinope,allegedlyfordefacingitsdebasedcurrency.Thereafter,helivedinstreetsofCorinthandAthenswhereheissaidtohavelivedinabarrel.HebecametheprototypeofCynicism.

TheDog"
andDiogeneshadnoproblemwiththenickname.Cynicismemphasizedmoralself-mastery,rejectionofgovernment,property,marriageandreligion.However,Diogeneswasnotabovestealing,claimingallthingsarethepropertyofthewise.
Cynicism:
Aphilosophy,firstexpoundedbyDiogenes,thatencouragesindifferencetosocialconventionandmaterialcomfortsinordertoconcentrateonself-knowledge.
4.AlexandertheGreat
AlexanderIIIwastheKingofMacedonia(336—323BC)andconquerorofAsiaMinor,Syria,Egypt,Babylonia,andPersia.HisreignmarkedthebeginningoftheHellenisticAge.
Alexander'
sconquestsandtheadministrativeneedsofhisGreek-speakingsuccessorspromotedthespreadoftheGreeklanguageandGreekcultureacrosstheeasternMediterraneanandintoMesopotamia.
5.Plato
Plato(427?
—347B.C.?
)wasaGreekphilosopher,afollowerofSocrates.HefoundedtheAcademy(386B.C.),wherehetaughtandwroteformuchoftherestofhislife.Platopresentedhisideasintheformofdramaticdialogues,asinTheRepublic.
6.Aristotle
Aristotle(385—323B.C.)wasthegreatestofheathenphilosophers.ApupilofPlato,thetutorofAlexandertheGreat,andtheauthorofworksonlogic,ethics,metaphysics,naturalsciences,politics,andpoetics,heprofoundlyinfluencedWesternthought.Inhisphilosophicalsystem,theoryfollowsempiricalobservation,andlogic,basedonthesyllogism,istheessentialmethodofrationalinquiry.

HerculeswasthesonofZeusandAlcmene,aheroofextraordinarystrengthwhowonimmortalitybyperforming12laborsdemandedbyHera.
