The"OccupyCentral"movement

I.Introduction

SinceHongKongstudentsstartedtheirclassboycottonSept22,HongKongpeoplehavebeenforciblytakenonarollercoasterrideofsimultaneouspoliticalchaos,economicdownturnandsocialdisruptiontriggeredbythe"OccupyCentral"movement.

After75daysofturmoil,theprotesters'mainbaseinAdmiraltywasclearedonDec11,andthemostdisturbingperiodinHongKongsinceits1997returntothemotherlandendedmostlypeacefully.Manyresidentsexpressedsupportfortheclearance,termingita"Christmasgift".

Theresumptionofnormaltrafficsignalstheendoftheabusivecampaignthatarousedincreasingangerfromthepublic.Themasterminds,organizersandparticipantsmustallhaveknowntheirunconstitutionaldemands,andillegalapproachintheirpursuitwouldproveunpopularbuttheycontinuedregardless.Nowtheyhavetofacetheconsequencesofrecklesslyharmingpublicinteresttowinafewbenefitsforoppositionpoliticians.

'Occupy'hastakenaheavytollonHongKong,anditcausedalotofdamagetoHK.

II.BODY

"Occupy"hasunquestionablyfailedtoachieveitsgoals.SadlyithasinflictedsomeseriousdamageonHongKong.

A:

Damagetoeconomy

Firstly,itleftvisitorstothecitywithanunfavorableimpression.Theyexpectedtoseeacivilized,harmoniousandlaw-abidingcommunity.Instead,theysawadeeplydividedsocietytornapartoverpolitics.Theeconomywasalsohurt,asthemastermindsoftheillegalmovementintended.

AlthoughthecampaigndidnotsucceedinreallyoccupyingCentral,theblockadesinAdmiralty,MonKokandCausewayBayharmednearbysmallbusinesses.Ithascausedbillionsofeconomiclosses.AnditalsogaveleadinginternationalratingagenciesgoodreasontoconsiderdowngradingHongKonginthenearfuture.

TheHongKong'sinternationalimageandit’sfavorableinvestmentenvironmentwasdestroyedatmoment.Thecampaignhasbeenended,butitsinfluencewilllast.

B:

Damagetotheruleoflaw

Theillegal"OccupyCentral"movementappearstobeobstinate.Neitherdemocracynortheruleoflaw-twoofsociety'smostfundamentalinstitutions-seemsabletotameitatpresent.

Injusttwomonths,theillegalmovementevolvedfrompeacefulsit-insinthebeginningtoresistingpoliceremovalenmasse.Theyviolentlyattackedgovernmentheadquartersaswellaspoliceofficerswithpotentiallylethalweaponsaswellasthebrazeninfringementofordinarypeople'sbasicrights-allinthenameof"civildisobedience".

Theleadingculpritsmustnotbeallowedtogetoffunpunishedaccordingtoexistinglaw,especiallyconsideringthefactmost,ifnotallofthem,arerepeatoffenders.

The"OneCountry,TwoSystems"principleandtheBasicLawisthecornerstoneofHongKong'sstabilityandprosperity,theruleoflaw.Nobodyisallowedtobreakthelawandharmtheinterestsofothersinthenameof"civildisobedience".

HoneKongwilltakesometimetorecoverfromthedamagecausedby"OccupyCentral".HongKongpeopleshouldcarefullyconsiderwhethertheywantsomethinglikethistohappenagain.

III.Conclusion

ThisyearwillgodownasaneventfuloneforHongKong.WhatstartedasamisreadingofBeijing's"OneCountry,TwoSystems"policyforHongKongculminatedinraucous"OccupyCentral"protests.ThefinalsiteoftheprotestswasclearedbytheHongKongpoliceonDec15th.

ItisregretfulthatdespitethepassageofnearlytwodecadessinceChinaresumedsovereigntyoverHongKong,manyHongKongpeoplearestillnotembracingtheirnation.

Duringtheperiodofproteststheyhavebeenadvocating"HongKongself-determination"andhaveclearlymisunderstoodtheconceptof"HongKongpeoplerulingHongKong"anda"highdegreeofautonomy."Thereforeourgovernmentandcitizensshouldfindwaystoembraceournationalidentityand"re-enlighten"thepublicaboutthenatureandscopeof"OneCountry,TwoSystems".

Lastbutnotleast,onlyifHongKongpeopleshowtheyacceptthe"OneCountry,TwoSystems"principle,genuineuniversalsuffragewillbeimplemented,otherwise,itwillbeoutofthequestion,andtherewillbemoretroubledowntheroad.
