threesistersandabrother.Theyarealoneinalargeoldhouse,milesfromanywhere.Theweatheroutsideisstormy,or“wuthering”(呼啸的)aslocalpeoplecallit.There’snoonehomebutaservantinthekitchenbelow.Theirmotherisdeadandtheirfather,apriest(牧师),isoutseeingthepeoplewhogotohischurch.Butevenwhenheisathome,heisdistantandserious.Theyplay,likeallchildrenplay,butwithapassion(热情)andimaginationthatisrareandremarkable.
Thechildren’snameswereCharlotte,EmilyandAnne;theirbrotherwascalledBranwell.Theylived200yearsagoinalittleplacecalledHaworthinWestYorkshireinthenorthofEngland.Threeofthembecamefamousasadults,andevenmoreaftertheir(sadlyearly)deaths.TheBrontesisters,astheyareknown,madeamarkontheliteratureoftheircountry.Theirtwomostfamousnovels,Charlotte’sJaneEyreandEmily’sWutheringHeights,havebeencopiedbyathousandotherwritersandreadbymillionsinalmosteverylanguagethatpeoplespeak.April21markedthe200thanniversaryofCharlotte’sbirth.
In2011,anamazingdiscoverywasmadethattakesusbacktothelargecreaky(破旧的)housethatstood200yearsago.Itisaverysmallnotebookcalled“TheYoungMen’sMagazine”.Theauctioneer(拍卖商)whosolditsaidthatitwashalfthesizeofacreditcard(信用卡).Onits19pagestherearethousandsofwords–4,000ofthemtobeexact.The“magazine”hasmade-upadvertisements(广告),newsitems,poemsandstoriesinit.Itshowstheimaginationofthosechildrenwho,cutofffromtheworld,wereforcedtoinventtheirown.
Whentheygettogether,allyoungchildrenplayatinventingtheirownworlds.Formost,theseworldsarerathernormal:
doctorsandnurses,soldiersandthelike.This200-year-olddocument(文件)showsthatthiswasnotthecasewiththeBrontes.TheimaginationsoftheBronteswerefarlargerthanthoseoftheaveragechild.“TheYoungMen’sMagazine”,asthenotebookiscalled,hasstories,newsandpoems,evenmade-upadvertisements,whichshowthegreatcreativitythesistershadasadults.

Speakingoflove,WutheringHeightsisfamouslythelovestoryofCatherineandHeathcliff.CatherineisoneofMr.Earnshaw’stwochildren.TheyliveinWutheringHeightshighintheYorkshirecountryside,aplacethatissimilartowhereEmilylived.Heathcliffisanorphan(孤儿)boywhocomesintothehouseasaworker.
HeandCatherinearealwaystogetheraschildren.Theyspendalotoftimegettingintotroubleonthemoorstogether.Theirrelationshipissostrongthattheysaymorethanoncethattheyareeachother.AlthougholdMr.EarnshawlovesHeathcliff,Catherine’sbrotherHindleyhateshim.
