cover70percentoftheEarth’ssurface.Thestudybeganin2000andis
expectedtoendin2010,atacostofUS$1billion.Sofar,scientistshave
countedmorethan15,000speciesoffishandaround200,000speciesof
animalsandplantsintheoceans.Theyexpecttofindatleastanother
5,000speciesoffish.
Scientistsbelievethattheanimalsandplantsthey’vefoundsofar
representjust10percentoftheworld’stotalunderwaterpopulation.That
meansthattheyexpecttofindalmost2millionspeciesofanimalsand

plantsby2010.“Ourgoalby2010istoknowasmuchaboutlifeinthe

Thenewly-discoveredspeciesarenotallnewspecies.Manyofthem
havejustneverbeenrecordedbefore.Scientistsfearthatthegrowing
