OVERALLARCHITECTURE
2.1TheEVOLIUM™A9110-EMicroBaseStationconcept
AnEVOLIUM™A9110-EMicro-BTSsiteconfigurationconsistsofuptosixA9110-Ebasicunits.Thisbasicunitisa2TRXbasisblockenablingtobuildlargerMicro-BTSsiteconfigurations,withcapacitiesfromtwouptotwelveTRXsinoneuptosixsectors.
Buildingormodifyingsiteconfigurationsisfullyflexible.Byonlyaddingbasicunits,itispossibletoadaptcapacitytonetworkdevelopmentrequirements.

TheA9110-Ebasicunithasa2-TRXcapacity.Itisbasedonathree-levelmodulararchitecture,consistingofthe
Antennacouplinglevel,
Transceiver(TRX)level,
BasestationControlFunction(BCF)level,
forwhichareducedsetofveryhighlyintegratedmoduleswasdeveloped.
Twotypesofbasicunitsareprovidedwithadifferentantennacouplingleveltoconnecteitheroneortwoantennas.TheinformationflowbetweentheAirinterfaceandtheAbisinterfaceforbothtypesarepresentedinFigure2.

2.2.1
Antennacouplinglevel
Theantennacouplingleveliscalledantennanetwork;
itisthestagebetweentheantennasandtheTRXlevel.Thehardwareofantennacouplingmoduleisfrequencybanddependant.
Thegeneralfunctionsperformedatthislevelare:
Duplexingtransmitandreceivepathsontocommonantennas,
Feedingthereceivedsignalsfromtheantennatothereceiverfrontend,wherethesignalsareamplifiedanddistributedtothedifferentreceivers(Low-NoiseAmplifier(LNA)andpowersplitterfunctions);
Providingfilteringforthetransmitandthereceivepaths,
Hybridcombining,ifnecessary,outputsignalsoftwotransmittersandconnectingthemtoasingleantenna.
Twodifferentantennanetworkarchitecturesareoffered:
Single-antennaarchitecturebasedonhybridcombining,
Low-lossarchitecturebasedonaircombining.

Thesingle-antennaarchitectureallowstoconnecttwoTRXstoonesingleantenna.Itcombinestwotransmitterstooneoutputwiththehybrid-combiningmethod.Italsodistributesthereceivedsignaltotworeceivers.Antennadiversityisnotpossiblewiththissolution.

2.2.1.2Low-lossarchitecture
Comparedtothesingle-antennaarchitecture,the"
low-loss"
architecturecontainstwofullchainsfortransmissionandforreception,withforeachchainaduplexer,areceiverfrontend(LNA)andasplitter.
ThebasicoperationmodeistodedicatethetwochainstotwoTRXsofasamesector:
inthereceivepath,theoutputoftheLNAofeachchainisfed,throughthesplitter,toboththereceiverofthischainandthereceiveroftheotherchain,thusprovidingantennadiversity,
inthetransmitdirection,thesignalcomingfromeachTRXisfedtoitsownantennathroughaduplexer;
air-combiningisthususedinsteadofhybridcombining,resultinginalowerlossinthetransmitpath(hencethename)andanincreasedTxoutputpowercomparedtosingle-antennaarchitecture
AnalternativeoperationmodeistodedicateeachchaintoaseparateTRXofadifferentsector,providingtwosectorsofoneTRXeach.Switchingbetweenthetwomodesisobtainedonlythroughasoftwarecommand.Noadditionalhardwarechangeisnecessary.

2.2.2Transceiver(TRX)level
Thetransceiver(TRX)levelcoversGSM850,GSM900,GSM1800andGSM1900functionalities,includingfullrate,halfrate,enhancedfullrate,antennadiversity,radiofrequencyhopping(synthesizedhopping)anddifferentcipheringalgorithms.
InsideeachTRXmoduleanRFloopisimplemented.ThelooptestisperformedafterdownloadingthefrequenciestotheMicro-BTSasasupplementtotheautotest.
TheTRXmodulealsohandlestheRadioSignalingLink(RSL)protocol.
2.2.3BasestationControlFunction(BCF)level
ThislevelisrealizedbytheMicro-BTSStationUnitModule(MSUMA).Thismoduleisphysicallypresentineachbasicunit,masterorslave
