In2011,retiredbricklayer(砖瓦工)Joao,71,foundaSouthAmericanpenguinlyingontherocksandclosetodeathonhislocalbeach,justoutsideRiodeJaneiro,Brazil.Joaocleanedtheoiloffthepenguin’sfeathers,fedhimadailydietoffishtogethisstrengthupandnamedhimDindim.

Aweeklater,Joaotriedtoreleasethepenguinbackintothesea,buthejustwouldn’tleave.Joaotookhimoutinhisboat,wenttoanearbyislandandreleasedhim.Laterthatday,thepenguinwasbackinJoao’sbackyard.Intheend,DindimstayedwithJoaofor11monthsandthen,“justafterhechangedhiscoatfornewfeathers,hedisappeared,”Joaoexplains.

Infact,DindimreturnstoJoao’slittlebeachinthesummereveryyear-it’sbelievedthatthepenguinpreferstovisittheelderlymanratherthanmigrate(迁徙)tothefeedingareasofhisspecies.

Joaorecallshowthepenguincontinuedtofollowhimhome.“Everyonesaidhewouldn’treturn,buthehasbeencomingbacktovisitmeforthepastfouryears,”hesays.“HearrivesinJuneandleavestogohomeinFebruaryandeveryyearhebecomesmoreaffectionate(表示关爱的)asheappearsevenhappiertoseeme.”NownewpictureshaveemergedofDindimvisitingJoaoinhisvillageearlierthismonth.

AnneFrankandherdiary

Throughouthistory,wecanfindexamplesofinspiringyoungpeoplewhoshowedcourageandhopeintimesofextremehardship.AnneFrankisoneofthem.Herdiaryisoneofthemostimportantdiarieseverwritten.

Annewasbornon12June,1929,inFrankfurt,Germany.HerfamilywasJewish.DuringWorldWarII,theyhadtoliveinasecrethidingplacetoescapetheNaziHolocaust(大屠杀).ThiswasatimewhentheGermanNaziswerekillingJews.AroundsixmillionJewsdiedintheHolocaust.

Anne’sfatherwasasuccessfulbusinessmaninGermany.WhentheNazitookcontrolofthecountryin1933,theFrankfamilymovedtoAmsterdaminNetherlands.Later,thiscitybecameunsafe,soAnne’sfatherpreparedsomesecretroomsabovehisoffices.On6July,1942,Annemovedintothis“secretannexe(辅楼)”withherparents,heroldersisterMargot,andfourotherJewishpeople.

Theannexewassmallandcrowded.Everyonehadtobeveryquiet.Theywereoftenhungryandalwaysafraidofbeingcaught.Tokeepbusy,Annewroteinherdiary.Shedescribedherdailylifeandherstruggles,butalsowroteaboutherhopesanddreams.“Idon’tthinkofallthemisery,”shewrote,“butofthebeautythatstillremains.”

Thefamilywasinhidingfortwoyears.Duringthattime,Annekeptadiaryandwroteinitalmosteveryday.On4August,1944,theannexewasdiscoveredandeveryonehidingthereweresenttolabourcamps(劳改营).AnneandhersisterMargotdiedinaGermancampinMarch1945.Ofallthepeoplewhohadhiddenintheannexe,onlyOttoFrank,Anne’sfather,survived.

Anne’sdiarywasdiscoveredbyfriendsandreturnedtoOttoFrankafterthewar.ThediarywasoriginallywritteninDutch.Sincethen,ithasbeenpublishedinatleast67languagesand31millioncopieshavebeensold.TheEnglishversioniscalledTheDiaryofaYoungGirl.Today,theannexebuildinginAmsterdamwhereAnneandherfamilyhidisamuseumcalledAnneFrankHouse.

AlthoughAnne’slifeinhidingwasextremelydifficult,herdairyrevealsherpositiveattitude.Forexample,in1944,shewrote,“InspiteofeverythingIstillbelievethatpeoplearereallygoodatheart.”

AnneFrank’sdiaryhasinspiredteenagerseverywhere.“Thegoodnews,”shewrote,“isthatyoudon’tknowhow
