Hebegantorethinkhowhumanbeingscomposemusic.Herealizedthatcomposers'brainsworklikebigdatabases.First,theytakeinallthemusicthattheyhaveeverheard.Thentheytakeoutthemusicthattheydislike.Finally,theymakenewmusicfromwhatisleft.AccordingtoCope,onlythegreatcomposersareabletocreatethedatabaseaccurately,rememberit,andformnewmusicalpatternsfromitCopebuiltahugedatabaseofexistingmusic.HebeganwithhundredsofworksbyBach.Thesoftwareanalyzedthedata:
itbrokeitdownintosmallerpiecesandlookedforpatterns.Itthencombinedthepiecesintonewpatterns.Beforelong,theprogramcouldcomposeshortBach-likeworks.Theyweren'tgood,butitwasastartCopeknewhehadmoreworktodo-hehadawholeoperatowrite.Hecontinuedtoimprovethesoftware.Soonitcouldanalyzemore.complexmusic.Healsoaddedmanyothercomposers,includinghisownwork,tothedatabase.,Afewyearslater,Cope'scomputerprogram,called"Emmy",wasreadytohelphimwithhisopera.TheprocessrequiredalotofcollaborationbetweenthecomposerandEmmy.Copelistenedtothecomputer'smusicalideasandusedtheonesthatheliked.WithEmmy,theoperatookonlytwoweekstofinish.ItwascalledCradleFalling,anditwasagreatsuccess!
