1Introduction
Nowadays,asthegrowthoftherangeanddepthofglobalization,culturalintegrationbecameincreasinglyevident.African-AmericanCultureandAAVEhavegraduallyattractedmorepeople’sattentioninrecentyears.Asaspecialkindofdialect,AAVEpossessescomplexsocialandculturalfunctions.TheAdventuresofHuckleberryFinnwrittenbyAmericanwriterMarkTwainisthemostrepresentativeworkofusingAAVE,itoccupiedimmortalplaceinthehistoryofAmericanliterature.However,owingtosyntaxdifferencesbetweenAAVEandStandardEnglishinphonetics,vocabulary,sentencestructureandotheraspects,besides,scholarsarestillstuckattheexploratorystageonthestudyofitstranslationprinciplesandmethods,translationworksarequitedifferentwithdiversityoftranslationmethodsandprinciples,thusliterarycriticsdomesticandoverseasgavecontradictorycomments.Underthiscircumstance,itisnecessarytoconductfurtherdiscussionandresearchonAAVEtranslation.
Translationinvolvesconversingtwolanguageswithdifferentculturalcontexttorealizetheintegrationandcommunication.Agoodtranslationworkcannotonlybringoutthe“form”oftheoriginal,butalsoreflectthe“spirit”.Withtheguidanceoftranslatology,linguisticsandrelevanttheories,thewaysofdescription,summaryandcomparisonwereusedtostudytheAAVEtranslationstrategies.TheoriginanddefinitionofAAVE,thestatusquoofdialectandAAVEtranslationweresummarizedanditalsopointedoutthetranslationplightofAAVE.ZhangWanliandChengShihavetranslatedTheAdventuresofHuckleberryFinnintotwodifferentversions.TheprinciplestheyfollowedandmethodstheyusedinAAVEtranslationwerewidelydivergent,sothetwoworkshavetheirownprominentfeatureandshortcomingsthatcannotbeignoredandprovidedaspecificexampleofAAVEtranslation.Thecomparativestudyandanalysiswereconductedonthosetwoworksfromdifferenttheoreticalperspectives,theimportanceoftheoreticalguidancewasdemonstrated,theadvantagesanddisadvantagesofthosetwoworksundertheoreticalrules.
Onthebasisofcomparisonandanalysisofthosetwoversions,thethesisraisesfiveprinciplesofAAVEtranslation,whichshouldalsofollowthebasictranslationprinciples.Theyareprincipleofreproducing,thefunctionofAAVE;principleofforeignizationratherthandomestication;principleofreproducingthelanguageaestheticeffectsofAAVE;principleofoverallcoordination;principleofrespectingthecultureofAfricanAmericans.Atthesametime,basedontheadvantagesofthosetwoversionsandpreviousmethods,theauthorconcludessuchtranslationStrategiesofAAVEasstandardcolloquiallanguagemethod;equivalentdialectblendingtranslation;malapropismmethod;syntaxvariationroutinizationmethod;semanticregenerationandannotationmethod.
2AnalysisoftranslationmethodsofAAVE
Itfinallyconcludesthateachmethodorstrategyoftranslationhasitsmeritsanddemerits,sointhecourseoftranslatingAAVEtranslatorsshouldusethemproperlyandcomplementarilytotargetdifferentsituationssoastoachievethebesteffectoftranslation.
Atranslatorshouldbethemasterofbilingualfirstofall;theChineseproficiencylevelisoneofthemostimportantconditionsdeterminingthetranslationabilityofthetranslator.Atranslator’sChineseproficiencylevelindicatesnotonlyhisproficiencylevelofmasteringstandardChinese,butalsotheabilityofmasteringtheotherkindsofexpressionasclassicalChineseanddialects.Inliterarytranslation,inordertoconveycharacteristicsofcharactersandaestheticsenseoftheoriginal,thetranslatormustalsohaveconsiderableartisticexpressiveforce,includingcertainoftranslationskills,fluentwritingstyleandextensiveknowledge.(ZhengHailing,2000:
