Thesimplicityandeaseofaccessofamenuarethemainthingsthatfacilitateorderingfoodinarestaurant.ATabletmenucompletelyrevolutionizesthepatron’sdiningexperience.ExistingprogramsprovideanappthatrestaurantscanusetofeedtheirmenusintoIOS&
Androidbasedtabletsandmakeiteasierforthedinerstoflip,swipe&
tapthroughthemenu.Wehereaimtoprovidetherestaurantswithatabletmenuthatwouldrecommenddishesbasedonarecommendationalgorithmwhichhasnotbeenimplementedelsewhere.InadditiontothisweruntheapponanAndroidbasedtablet&
notonanIOSbasedtabletwhichismoreexpensivealternative.Weuseacloud-basedserverforstoringthedatabasewhichmakesitinexpensive&
secure.

1.INTRODUCTION
Overtheyears,technologyhastremendouslyrevolutionizedtherestaurantindustry.Butmuchoftheinnovationhasbeenwithpoint-of-sale(POS)operations.Yetotherareasofarestaurantareripeforinnovation,suchasthemenu.Traditionalrestaurantservicerequireswaiterstointeractwithcustomersdirectlybeforeprocessingtheirorders.However,ahigh-qualityrecommendationservicesystemwouldactivelyidentifycustomersandtheirfavoritemealsandexpenditurerecords.
Thereisafamoussayingthat“Peopleeatwiththeireyes”.Thee-Menuprovidesadditionalinformationaboutmenuitemsanddrinksthanatraditionalpapermenu.Withinteractivepicturesitgivesadditionalinformationaboutthefooditem.Tabletsaresaidtoeliminateorder-takingerrorsfromthewaiters.Inthekitchen,thereislessconfusionaseverythingisnowwrittenclearly.Developersofsimilarapplicationsmaintainthatcustomerswhoseatattablesoutfittedwithtabletsspendabout20%morethanthoseatothertables.Withthevisuals,youknowexactlywhatyou’regoingtogetinyourplate.Theservicegoesquicker.Tabletsaresaidtoallowcuttingthelaborexpenses.Customersfeelmoreinvolvedintheprocess.Restaurantscanbuildtheire-reputationandcustomercommunityinlive.
Therestaurantmenuhasevolvedfromitshumblebeginningsoncartechalkboardsandimagelessprinttotoday’sdetailed,colorfuldisplays.Withtheemergenceofdigitaltabletsanduser-friendlytouchscreentechnologymenuscanmovetoawholenewsurface.Withthiselectronicmenu,orderscanbetakencorrectlythefirsttime.Thereisnoneedtorunbackandforthtoadistantterminal,becausetheterminalisalwayswiththeserver.Everyorderisassociatedwithanindividualseatatthetable,andordersarebuiltonecustomeratatime,justlikeonpaper,butwithgreateraccuracy.Itemscanalsoeasilybesharedbythewholetable,movedormodified,andnotedandthecostcanbecalculatedinrealtime.
TheRecommendationalgorithmsuggestsdishestothepatronsbasedonpreviousorders.Itmakesiteasierforthecustomertobuildhis/herorderandalsoviewthemostpopulardishes.Moreover,variousdimensionfilterscanbeusedaccordingtoindividualpreferencese.g.Price,taste,quantity,etc.
ThereareseveralrestaurantsinMumbaiwhichhavereplacedthetraditionalpapermenuswiththedigitizedtabletmenu.Butnoneoftheappsletthepatronplaceanorderdirectlytothekitchen.Thetablet’suseisrestrictedtosimpleviewingofthemenu.
2.EXISTINGSYSTEMS
2.1ConventionalSystems
Restaurantservicessuchasmakingreservations,processingorders,anddeliveringmealsgenerallyrequirewaiterstoinputcustomerinformationandthentransmittheorderstokitchenformealpreparation.Whenthecustomerpaysthebill,theamountdueiscalculatedbythecashier.
Althoughthisprocedureissimple,itmaysignificantlyincreasetheworkloadofwaitersandevencauseerrorsinmealorderingorinprioritizingcustomers,especiallywhenthenumberofcustomerssuddenlyincreasesduringbusyhours,whichcanseriouslydegradetheoverallservicequality.
2.2ElectronicPOSTerminals
Averycommonlyimplementedsystem,currentlybeingusedbynumerousrestaurantsandchainsallovertheworld,istheelectronicpoint-of-saleterminalsystem.
Here,theservers/waitersgenerallytaketheorderfromthecustomerandheadontoaterminal,wheretheycanfeedtheorderintoacomputer.Theordercanthenbetransmittedtothekitchenautomaticallyviatheterminalthroughanetwork,oritmayevenbedeliveredmanuallybytheservertothekitchen.
Althoughahugeimprovementoverthepenandpaperstillprevalentovertheworld,thisdoesnothavemuchvalueadditionforthecustomerandmostlyonlybenefitstheestablishmentandtheadministrationoftheestablishment.
2.3TabletBasedMenu
Withthecurrentonslaughtandpopularityoftouchbaseddevices,especiallytheAppleiPad,itdidnottakelongforthetabletbasedmenustomakeanentranceintothemarket.
Intheircurrentstate,thesemenusarejustaglorifiedversionoftheirpaperbasedcounterparts.
Theworkflow,evenwiththesetabletmenus,remainsthesameastheonementionedinsection2.1oracombinationoftheprevioustwo.Thereisverylittlevalueadditiontothecustomerandtheestablishmentoritsstaff.
Theavailabletechnologyisdefinitelynotbeingutilizedtoitsmaximumpotential.
3.PROPOSEDSYSTEM
3.1SystemArchitecture
Thefollowingfigure(Fig3.1),demonstratesthebasicarchitectureofoursystem.Understandingtheotherintricaciesanddetailsofthesystemwillbecomealoteasierifonegoesthroughthisfigure,beforedivingintotherestofit.

Thesystemwillconsistofthefollowingcomponents:
Thebackend,whichismadeupofthewebserverandthedatabase,andthefrontendsthatincludeboththepatronfrontend(deliveredasanativemobileapplication)andtheadministrationorthekitchenfrontend(deliveredasawebapplication).
ThissystemisbasedontheverypopularModel-View-Controller(MVC)architecture.MVCismostcommonlyusedinwebsites,verypopularandtriedandtested.
Noneofthefrontendsdirectly“talk”tothedatabase.TheyinsteadrelyonRESTFULwebservicesthatcanbeusedtoperformCRUDoperationsonthedatabase.

Thefollowingfigure(Fig3.2)demonstratestheflowofourtabletapplication.
3.2SystemOverview
Themostimportantcomponentsofthissystemarethedatabaseandthepatronfrontendsorthetabletapplications.
Providingvaluetoboththebusinessanditspatronisanimportantobjective,butwebelievethatonefollowstheother.Followingthatbelief,thecustomerisgivenawholelotofimportance.
Thepatronwillbepresentedwithatablet,runningtheAndroidOS.Thistabletwillbesynchronizedwiththedatabaserunningonourcentralizedcloudpoweredservers.
Themenudata,uponsynchronization,isstoredonlocallyonthetabletssothattheuser,i.e.patron,neednotwaitforthemenutobedownloadedfromtheservers.Thiswillallowfasteraccesstothemenu.
Theusercanthenbrowsethemenuhowevertheywantto,sortingtheitemsonvariousdimensionslikeprice,popularity,ratings,etc.Theusercanalsoclickthroughtoviewmoreinformationaboutanyitemlikenutritionalinformation,ingredients,triviaandanyothercontentthattherestaurantadministrationmayfeellikeincluding.
Theusercanalsoviewpersonalizedrecommendationsforitemsthattheymaylike.Thisisoneofthemostimportantaspectsofoursystemthatnotonlyenhancesthecustomerexperiencebutcanalsohelpincreaserevenueforthebusiness.
Whilebrowsingthroughthemenu,thecustomermayadditemstohis/herorder.Thisprocessiscommonlyknownas“buildingtheorder”.Aftertheorderisbuiltandread,theusermaygoaheadandplacetheorder.Thestaffwillautomaticallyandalmostinstantlybenotifiedaboutthenewordersothattheycanactonit.
Iftheestablishmentallows,theusermayeventrackthestatusoftheirordersothattheyknowwhentoexpecttheirfoodanddrinkstolandupontheirtable.
3.3RecommendationOverview
Therecommendationalgorithmisaninnovativefeaturethatweaimtoincludeinourmenu.Whenmosttabletmenusprovidethecustomerswithonlyasimplemenu,thissystemwillproviderecommendationswhichwillmakeiteasiertobuildanorderconsideringwhatothercustomershaveorderedpreviouslyorthesimilaritiesbetweenvariousdishes.
Recommendationsystemsusingsetswereconsidered.
Wefinallydecidedtousethebelowmethodology,whichhasbeendiscussedinanearlierstudy.
Thealgorithmmainlyhas5parts:
1.Users-acertainnumberofpeoplearemadetorateindividualfooditems.
2.Entities-thefooditems.
3.ValueDimensions-thecategoriesthatareformedtoratethefooditemse.g.Price,quality,meatcontent,etc.
4.BeliefSystem-ispersonaltoeachuser&
allowstellingthesystemwhatidealvaluetheywanteachvaluedimensiontohave.
5.Idealcandidate-setofidealvaluedimensionsthatareformedonthebasisofaweightedaverage.
EachUserratesafooditemonascaleof1to5withrespecttotwothings:
1.User’sidealvaluedimension.
2.Theweightortheimportanceofthatvaluedimension.
Withthefooditemssetinplace,ournexttaskwastoanalyzethevariousattributesthatwereassociatedwitheachfooditem.Weappliedafooditemclickcountertotheentiredataset,whichproducedalistofthemostviewedfooditem.AfterlistingouttheTopNclickedfood-itemsbythecustomers,weapply
