Mr.SylvanN.GoldmanofOklahomaCityinventedtheshoppingcartin1937.Mr.Goldman’sinventiondidnotmakehimfamous.Itdid,however,makehimveryrich.

WhenGoldmaninventedthecarthewasinthesupermarketbusiness.Everydayhewouldseeshopperslugginggroceriesaroundinbasketsthattheyhadtocarry.OnedayGoldmansuddenlyhadtheideaofputtingbasketsonwheels.Thewheeledbasketswouldmakeshoppingmucheasierforhiscustomers.Andbylighteningtheirchore,hewouldattracttheirbusiness.Consideringtheidea,Goldmanwalkedintohisofficeandsatdownonafoldingchair.Lookingdownatthechair,Goldmanhadanotheridea.Thecarts,herealized,shouldbemadesotheycouldbefoldedup.Thiswouldmakeiteasiertostorethemwhennotinuse.

OnJune4,1937,Goldman’sfirstgroupofcartswasreadyforuseinhismarket.Hewasterriblyexcitedonthemorningofthatdayascustomersbeganarriving.Hecouldn’twaittoseethemusinghisinvention.ButGoldmanwasdisappointed.Mostshoppersgavethecartsalonglook,buthardlyanybodywouldgivethematry.Afterawhile,Goldmandecidedtoaskcustomerswhytheyweren’tusinghiscarts.“Don’tyouthinkthisarmisstrongenoughtocarryashoppingbasket?

Dayafterday,thesamethinghappened.Peoplewouldn’tusethecarts.Theypreferredabasketonthearmtoabasketonwheels.ButGoldmanwasn’tbeatenyet.Heknewhiscartswouldbeagreatsuccessifonlyhecouldpersuadepeopletogivethematry.Tothisend,Goldmantriedsomethingthatwasbothverycleverandveryfunny.Believeitornot,hehiredagroupofpeopletopushcartsaroundhismarketandpretendtheywereshopping!

Seeingthis,therealcustomersgraduallybegancopyingthefake(冒充的)customers.
