ThisprojectoftranslationwasauthorizedbyCollegeofTechnologyandEngineering,andundertakenbythefacultyofEnglishasateachingprogram.Theauthorofthisreport,togetherwithotherthreeteammembersacceptedtheprojectinSeptember,2014.ThecollegesuppliedthemanuscriptsoftheChinesewebsiteandappointedateacherinthePublicityDepartmentforconsultingincaseofmeetingproblemsrelatetoChineseversionduringtheprocessoftranslation.Afteradiscussionin-depthwiththePublicityDepartment,theteamgotaclearanddefiniteorientationonwhatandwhatwillnotbetranslated.Thetaskwouldbecomposedof2phases.Thefirstphaseincludesfivemainparts----AbouttheCollege,Faculties,DepartmentsandMajors,InternationalExchangeandLatestNews(newsfromJanuarytoAugust,2014).Thesecondphasemainlyincludestheupdateoftheinformationandnewsitems.Sofar,thefirstphaseoftheprojecthasbeencarryingoutandwillbecompletedbyNovember,2014.Theauthorofthispaperisinchargeoftranslating“AbouttheCollege,Faculties,DepartmentsandMajors,InternationalExchange”asherassignedtask,whichcoversabout11,330Chinesewords.
3.LiteraryFeaturesAnalysis
Agoodknowledgeofliteraryfeaturesofcollegewebsiteplaysadominantroleinachievingthegoalofgettingagoodtranslation.Accordingtotheanalysisofthetextsfunctions,languagestyle,
3.1TextFunctions
“Textfunctionsaredefinedaseffectsgivenbythetextinspecificcommunicativecontext”(FanYong).ThefirstandmostimportantobviousfunctionofcollegeEnglishWebsiteistoprovidethereadersnecessaryinformation,suchasthehistory,thestaffandfaculties,thedisciplinesandmajors,collegefacilitiesandinternationalcooperationandexchange.Besides,theEnglishWebsitealsohasthefunctionsofappealingandaspiringmorestudentstoenrollbypublicityandpromotingitsownimage.Toconclude,theEnglishwebsiteisbuilttoprovidenecessaryinformationforthetargetreaders,thesourcetextsshouldbetranslatedandeditedtomainlyfulfilltheinformativefunction.
3.2LanguageStyle
Lexically,thesourcetextisveryConciseandrichininformationwithalotofhighlycondensed,peculiarvocabulary,suchas“多学科、教学型、应用性、有特色”,,andmanyterminologiesrelatetodisciplines,organizations.Syntactically,scatteredshortsentences,parallelismsentencesandnonsubjectsentencesarecommonandtypicalsentencepatternanduniquelanguagephenomenoninthesourcetexts.Undoubtedly,thesefeaturesofthesourcetextsmakeitmoredifficulttogetanaccuratetranslation.
4.TranslationPreparation
Sinceboththecollegeandthetranslationteamattachedgreatimportancetotheprogram,theProgramProposalmadecleartheresponsibilitiesanddutiesofbothparties,whichincludethejobrequirements,expectationstotheprojectteamandthecontinuingsupportingfromthecollege.Similartoanytranslationproject,thetranslatingofwebsitealsocontainsthreemainparts—Pre-translating,While-translatingandPost-translating.Inordertohaveasmoothprocedure,itisindispensablefortheteamtodoplentyofpreparationsinPre-translationpart.Thepreparationsmainlyfocusonmakingaplanaboutthewholeproject,whichincludesthestaffing,thetranslationprocedureaswellasanalysisofthewebsitemanuscriptsandthestrategiesappliedinthisproject.
4.1TranslationPlanning
Ageneralplanoftheprojectstaffing,procedurewillbemadeinthispart.AsillustratedinFigure1,theprojectteamwascomposedoffourmembers.Theauthorworksastranslatorandtakesthewholechargeoftheproject.TheconsultantisresponsibleforanyproblemrelatestotheChinesemanuscript.AnydeletionoradditiontotheEnglishtranslationshouldbefullydiscussedwithandpermittedbytheconsultant.TheProofreaderisaprofessionaltranslatorwhoisresponsibleforproofreadingofthedraftsandsupervisionofthewholeproject.

AsillustratedinFigure2,theprojectwilllastfor2months.Duringtheprocess,thewholeteamwillholdformalteammeetingatleasttwice,onebeforetheprojectfordiscussing,oneafterforconclusion.Theallocationoftasks,responsibiltiesandthestrategiesaplliedtothetranslationwouldalsobefullydiscussedduringthemeeting.Afterthemeeting,thetanslatorswillbegintheirworkwithfullycomprehensionofthesourcetexts,searchingfortherelativeparalleltexts,makingGlossaries,andthenthefirstdaft,seconddraftandfinaldraft.TheConsultantwouldbeinhispositionforanyconsultationatthesametime.Theprofreaderwillworkdiligentlytoprofreadthedraftsatleasttwice.

4.2TranslatingStrategiesAdopted
TheGermanlinguistandtranslationscholarKatharinaReissreasrchedthefeaturesandrelativetranslatingstrategiesofdifferenttypeoftextsinthe
“FunctionalCharacteristicoftexttypesandlinkstotranslationmethods(adaptedfromReiss1971)”.Shedividedtextsintothreetypes:
“informationtext”,“expressivetext”and“operativetext”.AndReisspointedoutthatalthoughtheremaybedifferentfunctionsofeachtext,butthedeterminingfactorforatranslationis“whetherthetranslationtransmitsthemeaningofthesourcetexts”.“Informationtext”refersto“thosetextsfocusingonitscontentandwithamainfunctionofexchanginginformation,knowledgeandopinions”.Accordingtothosetheoriesontranslation,wecanfindthesourcetextsofthisproject,hasthefeaturesof“informationtext”,and“operativetext”.SoScopesTheoryandTextTypologywillbeadoptedinthisprojecttoguidethewholeprocessoftranslation.
4.3ContingencyPlan
Beforestartingtranslation,theCollegeofTechnologyandEngineeringassumedthewholeteammembersarequalifiedandabletocompletetheprojectunderthetimetable.Givenanyemergencywouldhappenduringtheprocess,suchashealthconditions,changeofworkloadorunexpectedsituationsoftheteammembersmayinfluencetheplannedprocedures.Thus,theprojectteammadeacontingencyplantomakesuretheprojectwillbeaccomplishedpunctually.Theplanmainlycontainstwoaspects.Firstly,eachteammembershouldtryhisorherbesttofulfillhisorherduty,butintheeventofanyemergency,somesparetimeisneededtobereserved.Secondly,onceanymemberoftheteamcouldnotcontinuethework,sheorheshouldtrytomakeanoticeinadvance.TheworkheorsheleftwouldbegiventotheotherbackupteachersintheFacultyofEnglish.Anydisputescausedbyemergenciesshouldbesolvedandremediedunderthepermissionofthecollege.
5.TranslatingProcess
Theprojectteamestablishedaspecifictranslationprocessafterdiscussion,whichincludestaskassignment,translation,proofreading,editing,deliveryandbackup.Duringtranslation,theteamusedpersonalcomputers,onlinedictionaries,searchengineandothertoolstohelpmakingglossariesandparalleltexts.
5.1TheGlossary
Astheprojectistranslationofthecollegewebsite,ithasalotofvocabulariesrelatingtomajors,faculties,disciplines.TheprojectteammadefulluseofInternetresources,dictionariesandparalleltextstogetauthoritativeandconvincingGlossaries.
5.2TheImplementationoftheTranslation
Accordingtotheprojectproposal,thewholetranslationprojectwilllastfor3months.Becausetheauthorwillcomposeherreportonthebasisofthetranslation,thetaskoftheauthorwouldbecompletedinadvance.Sofar,theauthorhasfinishedtheanalysisofthetextfeatureofthesourcetexts,adoptedpropertranslatingtheoryasguidance,thefirstpartoftheGlossaryandalmosthalfofthetranslation.Therestpartoftranslationwillbecompletedaheadoftime.
