JohnDayton,abiologistfromSanJoseprovidedananswer.Duringthe1990s,aterriblediseasekilledoffmostlargepineswhichprotectthemonarchhabitatsatNaturalBridges,forcingmonarchstoseekotherhabitats.Still,sincethemid-1990s,thenumberofoverwinteringmonarchsinCaliforniahasreducedbynearly90percent.ButterflypopulationsatSantaPaulaalone,forexample,havedroppedfromabout120,000tolessthan1,000---thelowestnumberintwentyyears.

InCalifornia,coastaldevelopmenthasreducedtheareasuitableforoverwinteringmonarchs.Illegallogging(砍伐),poorlymanagedtourismandsoonnearthebutterflyhabitatsarealsoendangeringthebutterflies.
