Theeldestofthethreepreparedtosetoutfirst.Hesaddledhishorseandawayherode,andthetwoyoungerbrothersrodewithhimasfarasthebridge.There,theeldestbrothersprangtotheground,madethreenotchesontherailwithhisswordandbadehistwoyoungerbrotherscomeeverydayandlookatthem.Aslongasthenotchesremainedwhiteandcleanitwouldmeanthatallwaswellwithhim,butifdropsofbloodappearedonthemthenthebrothersweretomakehasteandcometohisaid.
Ontheninthdaytheeldestbrotherarrivedinthethrice-threerealm.Hecametotheking’spalaceandsaidthathewantedtogetthebirdforhimself.Butthekingshookhishead,thoughtforamomentandthensaidinreply:
“Howeverdoyoumeantodoit,myson!
ThebirdisnoordinarybirdbutamagiconeknownasBulbulistheBird.Manywerethemenwhotriedtocaptureitbutwithoutsuccess,andnomatterhowmanymoretrytodoittheywillnotsucceed,either.”
Buttheeldestbrotherwouldnotbedissuaded.
“Thatmaywellbe,buttryIwilljustthesame!
”saidhe.
Wellandgood.Thesunwasjustbeginningtosetwhenhecameintothegardenandbeganlookingroundforthethree-crownedlime-tree.Helookedtooneside,anditwasn’tthere;
helookedtoanother,anditwasn’tthere,either.Atlast,hethrusthisheadinamidsomethickbirches,andthereitwas!
Overjoyed,hepushedaheadandfoundhimselfinasmallgladewiththethree-crownedlime-treejustbeforehimandthegoldencagehangingfromitsbranch.Thegladewasgrownwiththethickestofgrass,and,BulbulistheBirdnotyethavingreturned,adeepsilencereignedallaround.
Theprincehidhimselfinthegrassandwaited.
Byandbythewholegardenseemedtocomealiveandswellwithsoundjustasifthousandsuponthousandsofbirdshadsuddenlyburstintosongthere.BulbulistheBirdnowcameflyingup.Itlightedonthecage,and,lookingtoallsidesofit,saidinthemostpiteousandsorrowfuloftones:
“Everyoneisasleep.Istherenotasinglesoulanywherearoundwhowillsay:
‘Whydon’tyougotosleep,too,BulbulistheBird!
’”
Saidtheeldestbrothertohimself“
“Well,ifthatisallitwantsIcandoit.It’slittleenough.”
Andhesaidoutloud
“Gotosleep,BulbulistheBird!
”
ThesamemomentBulbulistheBirdstruckhimwithitswing,and-loandbehold!

Onthefollowingmorningthetwoyoungerbrotherscameoutontothebridgeandtheysawthatthereweredropsofbloodonthenotches.
Themiddlebrotheratoncepreparedtosetandseekhiselderbrother,andawayherodeatagallopforthethrice-threerealm.There,hewasmetbythekingwhotoldhimthathiselderbrotherhadgonetothegardentocatchBulbulistheBirdbuthadnotreturned.
Themiddlebrothercameintothegarden,helookedhereandhelookedthere,buthesawneitherhisbrothernorthethree-crownedlime-tree.Atlasthethrusthisheadinamidsomethickbirches,and,yes,therewasthelime-treebutnotasignofhisbrother.
Themiddlebrotherhidhimselfinthegrassandwaited.Adeepsilencereignedallaround,butthesunsoonsetandthenthewholegardencamealiveandswelledwithsoundjustasifthousandsuponthousandsofbirdshadsuddenlyburstintosongthere.BulbulistheBirdcameflyingup.Itlightedonthegoldencage,lookedtoallsidesofitandsaidinthemostpiteousandsorrowfuloftones:

Themiddlebrotherwastouchedbythesewordsandfeltsorryforthebird.

Onthefollowingmorningtheyoungestbrothercametothebridgeandhesawdropsofbloodonthenotches.Hepreparedtosetoffatoncetoseekhisbrothersandrodeoffatagallopforthethrice-threerealm.
There,hewasmetbythekingwhotoldhimthathisbrothershadgonetothegardentocatchBulbulistheBirdbuthadnotreturned.
Theyoungestbrothercameintothegarden,helookedhereandhelookedtherebuthesawneitherhisbrothersnorthethree-crownedlime-tree.Atlasthethrusthisheadinamidsomethickbirches,and,yes,therewasthelime-tree!
Thegrassarounditwassomewhattrampledbuttherewasnotasignofhisbrothers.
Theyoungestbrotherhidhimselfinthegrasswithineasyreachofthegoldencageandwaited.Adeepsilencereigned,butthesunsoonsetandthewholegardencamealiveandswelledwithsoundjustasifthousandsuponthousandsofbirdshadsuddenlyburstintosongthere.BulbulistheBirdcameflyingup.Itlightedonthegoldencage,lookedtoallsidesandbroughtoutinthemostpiteousandsorrowfuloftones:

InalittlewhileBulbulistheBirdbeganwailingandweepinganditmutteredbetweensobs:
“Everyoneisasleep,Ialonedarenotclosemyeyes.Istheretrulynotasoulanywherenearwhowillsayjustthesefewwords:
AtthistheyoungestbrotherfeltthathecouldnotcontainhimselfanylongerandwasabouttospeakwhenBulbulistheBird,tiringofrepeatingitself,hoppedintoitsgoldencage.Oncethere,itlookedtoallsides,and,nothearingorseeinganyone,burieditsbeakinitsfeathersandwenttosleep.Theyoungestbrothernowknewthathehaddonewellbykeepingmum.Hecreptoutofthegrassveryquietlyandreachedthroughthecagedoorfortheringonthebird’sclaw.Hedrewitoffwithhisrighthandand-bang!

BulbulistheBirdstartedawake,itflungandtoreaboutinthecage,beatitswingsandweptandsobbed.Onlytowarddawndiditquietendown,and,hangingitshead,said:
“Youhavemyring,sonowIaminyourpower.”
“Tellme,BulbulistheBird,wherearemybrothers?
”askedtheyoungestbrother.
“Thetwobirchesbesideyouareyourbrothers.”
“Tellme,BulbulistheBird,andwhatsortofcreaturesaretheotherbirchesgrowinghere?
“Theotherbirchesaremen,too.”
“Tellme,BulbulistheBird,howamItobringthembacktolife?
“Godeeperintothebirchgroveandifyoulookroundyoucarefullyyouwillseeaheapofsand.Throwthreehandfulsofthesandateachofthebirchesandtheywillregaintheirpropershape.”
Wellandgood.Theyoungestbrotherdidashewastold.Herevivedhistwobrothersfirstandthenthethreeofthembeganrevivingtheotherstogether.Butevensotheycouldnotdoitfastenough.Itwasonlywhenthosetheyhadbroughtbacktolifejoinedintheireffortsthatthebirchesbegantovanishonebyone,andthewholegrove,indeed,thewholegardencameastirandfilledwithmen.Theyallsurroundedtheyoungestbrotherandcouldhardlyspeakforjoy.
TheyoungestbrotherthenthoughtofawayofpleasingthemevenmoreandheaskedBulbulistheBirdtosingforthemthewayithadthenightbefore.
BulbulistheBirddidasheasked,anditsvoiceenchantedthemall.
Threedayspassed,anditwasdecidedtopartcompany,thethreebrothersgoingoffinonedirection,andtherest,inanother.
Itwasnoonwhenthethreebrothersreachedthesideofthesea.Thetwoelderbrotherswantedtowalkonbuttheyoungestwassotiredthathelaydownontheshoreanddroppedofftosleep.
Seeinghimlyingthere,thetwoelderbrothers,ungratefulwretchesthattheywere,decidedtostealBulbulistheBirdfromhimandcasthiminthesea.
Nosoonersaidthandone.TheytookawayBulbulistheBirdandthrewtheirbrotherinthesea,buttheylefttheringonhisfinger.
TheycamehomeandboastedtotheirfatherthattheyhadcaughtBulbulistheBirdandthatithadcostthemmuchtroubleandeffort,andtheysaidthattheydidnotknowwheretheiryoungerbrotherwas.
TheyhadthoughtthatBulbulistheBirdwouldobeytheircommandsandshowerthemwithriches,but,withtheringgone,itdidnothingofthesortandonlysattherewithhanginghead.
Muchtimepassed,thetwoelderbrotherslivedinthepalaceandnotwingeofconsciencecametobotherthem.Notsothekingtheirfatherwho,thoughtherewasnothinghecoulddotobringhisyoungestsonback,thoughtof
