Andhisyouthdidreturn,forallthiswasonlyanightmarewhichhehadonChristmasEve.Hewasstillyouththoughhisfaultswerereal;

hehadnotyetenteredthedampanddullcave,andhewasstillfreetowalkontheroadwhichledtothepeacefulandsunnyland.

Thoseyoungster,whoarestillwanderingattheentranceoflifeandhesitatingtochoosethebrightroad,remenberthatwhenyearshavepassedandyourfeetarelimpinginthedarkcave,youwillcrybitterly,butinvain:

Inthebowelsofamountainoffrontierzone,alittleboylivedincrudehouse,whichcouldonlyaccommodatefivepeopleofhishousehold.Therewasnotanyrailroad,freeway,highwayorevenapub(aninn)aroundthemountain.Hisancestorsandheweretheexclusiveinhabitantsonthemountainforseveralcenturies.

Twomen,bothinseriousillness,occupiedthesamewardofahospital.Onemanwasallowedtositupinhisbedforanhouradaytoundergotherapyanddrainthefluidfromhislungs.Hisbedwasnexttotheroom’sonlywindow.Theothermanhadtolieflatonhisbackallthetime.
