1WhenJaneWildemarriedayoungresearchstudentnamedStephenHawkingin1965,shealreadyknewhewasseriouslyill.Aschoolfriendbrokethenewsacoupleofyearsbefore,sayingthatStephenwassufferingfrom“someterrible,paralyzing,incurabledisease.”Thisisprobablyafairillustrationofwhatwasknownthenaboutmotorneuronedisease,longbeforetheworldwidesuccessofABriefHistoryofTimeandStephen’sbattleagainsttheillnesscombinedtoraiseitspublicprofile.
2ThereislittledoubtthatJaneWilde’sappearanceonthescenewasamajorturning-pointinStephenHawking’slife.Thetwoofthembegantoseealotmoreofoneanotherandastrongrelationshipdeveloped.ItwasfindingJanethatfacilitatedhimtobreakoutofhisdepressionandregeneratesomebeliefinhislifeandwork.ForHawking,hisengagementtoJanewasprobablythemostimportantthingthateverhappenedtohim.Itchangedhislife,gavehimsomethingtolookforwardtoandmadehimdeterminedtosurvive.WithoutthehelpthatJanegavehim,hewouldalmostcertainlynothavebeencapableofcarryingonorhadthewilltodoso.
3TheymarriedinJulyof1965.HawkinghimselfhassaidthatwhatreallymadeadifferencewasthathegotengagedtoawomannamedJaneWilde.Thisgavehimsomethingtolivefor.
4Inthememoirs,MusictoMovetheStars,writtenbyJaneHawking,whatisstrikingaboutheraccountoftheircourtshipisherreadinesstomarrysomeonewithsuchagrimdiagnosis,whosephysicalconditionwasdeterioratingbeforehereyes.Inafrankway,Stephen’sfathertoldherthathisson’slifewouldbeshort,aswould‘hisabilitytofulfillamaritalrelationship’,andadvisedhertohavechildrenquickly.Hismothertriedtowarnheraboutthehorrifyingsymptomstoexpect,butJanedeclinedtheofferofinformation.
5“IrepliedthatIwouldprefernottoknowthedetailsoftheprognosis,”shewrites,“becauseIlovedStephensomuchthatnothingcoulddetermefromwantingtomarryhim.Iwouldcookandwashandshopandmakeahomeforhim,dismissingallmyownpreviousambitionswhichwerenowinsignificantbycomparisonwiththechallengebeforeme.”ItishardtoavoidtheconclusionthatJane,whohadnotyetgraduatedfromcollege,didnotknowwhatshewastakingon.AlthoughStephendefiedthecomingupdeathsentencepasseduponhim,andisstillalivetoday,thedetailsofhisphysicaldeclinearerelentless.
6Jane’sdeterminationtocareforhim,andtocreateanenvironmentinwhichhecouldcontinuehisgroundbreakingworkonblackholes,takesupmanymorepagesthanheraccountoftheireventualseparation.IfStephen’sstruggletokeephismindclearisheroic,soisherdeterminationtobalancehisescalatingneedsandthoseoftheirthreechildren.Janeemergesasdecentandhonest,evenifherprosesometimesresemblesthesummariesoffamilynewsthatfalloutofcardsatChristmas.
7Hersisthestoryofamarriagebasedonapairingofmaleegoandfemalesubmissiveness,theworldlyexpressionsofwhichshefindsdisturbing.InCambridge,andatconferencesallovertheworld,physicistsgatherinexcitedgroups,whiletheirwivesarerelegatedtothestatusofsecond-classcitizens.ThisisanearlycauseofdissentintheHawkinghousehold,makingJanefeelshehasbecome“littlemorethanadrudge,effectivelyreducedtothatrolewhichinCambridgeacademiccirclesepitomizedawoman’splace”.
8Inspiteofthis,shemanagestobringuptheirchildrenandevencompleteherownPh.D.Cruelly,herhusband’sfameandhisdiseaseseemtoprogressintandem,hisbodyevermorewastedashiscelebrityincreases.Janeisgraduallytransformedfromhiswifeintohisnurse,herfunctionsbecoming“maternalratherthanmarital.”Thatthisdevelopmentmightbefataltothemarriageisobvious,althoughJanehopesinvainforanewkindofrelationship,basedonintellectualcompanionship.AstonishinglyforawomanwithherconventionalbackgroundandChristianbeliefs,sherespondsbyfindingafriendandlover,amusicianwhoisacceptedintothehousehold.ThisunusualarrangementisdisruptednotbyJane’sdecisiontoleaveStephenforherlover,whichsheinsistswasneverherintention,butherhusband’seventualabandonmentofherforoneofhisnurses.
9Heranswer,thatshestilllovedherhusband,maybeenoughforsomereaders.Whatissuggestive,however,isheroverwhelmingneedtobelieveinsomething—eitherGod,whoseexistenceisdeniedbyStephen,orthatformofauthorityrepresentedbyhergeniushusband.Justbeforetheirmarriagebreaksdown,sherevealstoajournalistthatherrolenolongerconsistsofpromotinghissuccessbutof“tellinghimthathewasnotGod.”
10JaneHawkingisaChristian.Shemadethestatementin1986,“WithoutmyfaithinGod,Iwouldn’thavebeenabletoliveinthissituation;
”namely,thedeterioratinghealthofherhusband.“IwouldnothavebeenabletomarryStepheninthefirstplacebecauseIwouldn’thavehadtheoptimismtocarrymethroughandIwouldn’thavebeenabletocarryonwithit.”
11WhenJanereflectsonherlifesincetheseparationanddivorce,shesoundsalittledirectionlessinspiteofherownhappysecondmarriage.ShelovedStephenandstillloveshim.Sheisalwayswillingtodevoteallherenergiestohim.Shehasstrivedtosupporthisacademiccareerbysacrificingacademicinterestsofherown.Maybethisdepressingendingturnedouttobewhatshedoesn’tdeserve.Butwhenitcomestolove,itisverycomplicatedanditisveryhardtodistinguishrightfromwrong.
