TheCentre’shomeisarestored18thcenturytownhouseinthenorthofDublin,thecityofJoyce’sbirthandthesettingforallhisworks.FromthiscentralplaceinJoyce’sheartland,theCentreaimstodevelopanappreciationofthismostremarkableandsignificantliteraryfigureofthe20thcentury.

No.35NorthGreatGeorge’sStreetwasbuiltin1784anddecoratedwithfineplasterwork(灰泥)byMichaelStapleton.Thehousewasrestoredinthe1980sandopenedastheJamesJoyceCentrein1996,runbymembersofJoyce’ssister’sfamily.

TheKenmareRoomisusedforlecturesandhasasmallshowofreproductionsofJoycefamilypictures.Inaddition,thisroomprovidesdetailsofJoyce’slifeandtimes,areadingtablewherevisitorscansitandreadworksbyandaboutJoyce,andashowofsomeofthemanytranslationsofJoyce’sworks.

Inherearlypoetry,GwendolynBrookswroteabouttheSouthSideofChicago.TheSouthSideofChicagoiswheremanyblackpeoplelive.Inherpoems,theSouthSideiscalledBronzeville.Itwas“AStreetinBronzeville”thatgainedtheattentionofliteraryexpertsin1945.Criticspraisedherpoeticskillandherpowerfuldescriptionsoftheblackexperienceduringthetime.TheBronzevillepoemswereherfirstpublishedcollection.

In1950,GwendolynBrooksbecamethefirstAfricanAmericantowinthePulitzerPrizeforLiterature.Shewontheprizeforhersecondbookofpoemscalled“AnnieAllen.”“AnnieAllen”isacollectionofpoetryaboutthelifeofaBronzevillegirlasadaughter,awifeandmother.Sheexperiencesloneliness,loss,deathandbeingpoor.Ms.Brookssaidthatwinningtheprizechangedherlife.

Hernextworkwasanovelwrittenin1953called“MaudMartha.”“MaudMartha”receivedlittlenoticewhenitwasfirstpublished.Butnowitisconsideredanimportantworkbysomecritics.Itsmainideasaboutthedifficultlifeofmanywomenarepopularamongfemalewriterstoday.

Insomeofherpoems,GwendolynBrooksdescribedhowwhatpeopleseeinlifeisaffectedbywhotheyare.Oneexampleisthispoem,“CornersontheCuringSky”.
