O·Henry,originallynamedWilliamSydneyPorter,isadistinguishedAmericanstorywriter.Bornin1862,O·HenryspenthisearlyyearsinGreensboro,NorthCarolina.Hehadtheexperienceworkingfornewspapersandbanks.HeservedthreeyearsinprisoninColumbus,Ohioanditwaswhileinprisonthatheseriouslybegantopursuethecraftandartofwritingofshortstories.Itwaswithinthosewallsheachievedhisfirstandearliestnationalsuccesswithmagazines,thoughhehadfartogotogainthefamethatwouldeventuallybehis.Gettingoutofprisonin1901,O·HenrytravelledtoNewYork,wherehebeganhisillustriousandprolificcareerasawriterofshortstories.

Likeameteorhiscareerflashedacrosstheliteraryfirmament.Forthebriefspanofroughlyadecadehewroteatafevered,hecticpace.Forinstance,inonetwoyearperiodhewrotemorethan110stories.Perhaps,likeSchubert,herealizedhehadnotlongtolive—thathiswork,ifheweretoaccomplishmuch,hadtobedonequickly.AndlikeSchubert,hisworkwasinterruptedbydeath.Surelyhewouldhaveproducedmoreofsignificancehadhecontinuedtolive;nevertheless,itisdoubtfulthathewouldhaveproducedanythingofgreaterqualitythanthatwhichhedidmanagetofinish.Atanyratethedebateisacademic.Heburnedhimselfoutby1910.Nothingofanyrealsignificanceappearedafterhisdeath.Hehadpublishedhisstoriesasfastashewrotethem.Likeameteorhedisappearedwiththesamesuddennessashehadappeared.Hewasgone.ButO·Henryleftbehindanpreciouslegacy.Thislegacyishisworks.
