1.ShouldTraditionalChineseEtiquetteBeTaughtinClass?
ThroughoutmostofChina’slonghistory,therelationshipsbetweenpeoplewerebasedoncarefullyprescribedformsofbehavior,thatis,etiquette.Learningandfollowingetiquetteissoimportantthatpeoplearealwaysjudgedbyhowcloselytheyfollowtheserulesofbehaviors.Forthosewhodonotfollowthoseprescribedrulesofconduct,theyareregardedasuncivilizedbarbarians.However,asChinahasbeenincreasinglyentangledintheglobalvillage,manyChinesepeople,especiallytheyoung,havelostsometraditionsbecauseoftheinfluencesofWesterncultures.Accordingtoafamousprofessor,themajorityofChinesecollegestudentshavenothadsystematictrainingontraditionalChineseetiquette.Asforme,traditionaletiquetteshouldbetaughtinclass.
Firstly,ifcollegestudentscanreceiveasystematiceducationintraditionaletiquetteinclass,theycangetmorepreparedforthefuture.Asisknown,collegestudentsusuallyhavelearntsometraditionaletiquettethroughdailyinteractionwithfriendsandrelatives,buttheprocessistime-consuming.Theyhavetobesensitiveenoughtoobserveotherpeople’sbehaviorsandthenknowwhatproperbehaviorsindifferentsocialsituationsare.Sometimesthelearningprocessisbytrialanderror.Theycanonlyformrightbehaviorsafterbreakingtherulesofconductandbeingcorrectedbythecostlyconsequence.Iftheyhavealreadytakenasystematicetiquettecourseincollege,theycanfollowproperetiquetteandhaveamoreguaranteedfuture.
Secondly,asthesemeticulousrulesofconducthavebeenformedthroughoutChinesehistory,theyareuniqueChinesecharacteristicsandareinseparabletoChineseculture.Withtheadventofglobalization,westerncultureissoinfluentialthatmanyyoungpeopleoftenlooktoWesterncustomsandetiquetteasbeingfashionable.Forexample,nowadaysmostyoungwomeninChinawouldliketowearwestern-stylewhitedressesandveilsatweddingwhiletraditionalChineseweddingsfeatureredgownsforbridesandwhiteisanabsolutetaboo.Inthelongterm,ifthetrendtoadoptwesternetiquettecannotbecurbed,theChinesegenerationsinthefuturewilllosetheirculturalidentity.
Furthermore,theextinctionofChineseetiquettewillbetothedetrimentofthediversityofglobalculture.Tosomeextent,thecoursecanservetoarousecollegestudents’culturalprideandhelptopreserveandfurtherdevelopChineseculture.
Inconclusion,takingtraditionalChineseetiquetteincollegewillnotonlymakegraduatesmorepreparedfortheirfuture,butalsocanconstituteanimportantmeasureforcollegestudentstoformChineseculturalidentityandthereforetopreserveChinesetraditionandfurtherdevelopit.
2.AreNowadaysCollegeGraduatesNotasCompetentasBefore?
Asaneconomicrulegoes,whensupplyoutweighsdemand,thepricedecreases.Thesameseemstrueforthecurrentsituationforcollegegraduates.Since1999,thecentralgovernmenthasimplementedtheGrandCollegeEnrollmentPlan,withthetotalnumberofcollegegraduatesontheincreaseinthefollowingyears.Buttheboomedeconomydoesnotprovideenoughjobsforthosegraduatescomingoutatatime.Therefore,manypeoplereasonthatcollegegraduatesarenotascompetentasbeforeformanyofthemhavedifficultiesinfindingjobs.ButIdisagreewiththisconclusion.
Firstly,admittedly,therearesomecollegegraduateswhoarenotcompetent,butthesestudentscannotrepresentallthestudents.DuetotheGrandCollegeEnrollmentPlan,moreandmorehighschoolstudentshaveaccesstothehighereducation.Inevitably,thestandardhasbeenlowered;
otherwise,universitycannotadmitsomanyapplicants.Whilethosesmartstudentsinhighschoolsaremorelikelytohaveexcellentperformance,othernot-so-goodstudentswouldhavedifficultiesincollegelearning.Asaresult,thosegraduateswithbadperformanceincollegecannotdemonstratethevalueofhigherlearningtothesocietyandhencetheygraduallyformtheincompetentimageofcollegegraduates.
Secondly,thosewhoholdthisnegativeopiniondonottakethesocialcontextintoconsideration.Asisknown,intheperiodwhenChinacarriedoutplannedeconomicpolicies,collegegraduatesdidnotneedtoworryabouttheirjobs,for“iron-bowls”waitedforthemaftergraduation.Butafterthereformofhighereducation,collegegraduateshavetofindjobsforthemselves.Whenhundredsofthousandsofgraduatescompeteforalimitednumberofjobvacancies,thereareinevitablymanywhocannotprocureidealjobs.Besides,employmentisalwaysinfluencedbyglobalandnationaleconomy.Wheneconomyslowsdown,thecorporateworldwouldnotrecruitasmanyemployeesasbefore.Forexample,in2009,manycollegegraduates,frombothprestigiousuniversitiesandless-knownuniversities,havedifficultiesinhuntingjobs.Inthissense,itisnotcollegegraduatesthatareincompetent;
instead,itisthesocialcontextthatisunfavorabletocollegegraduates.
Asfactorscombinetoleadtoaresult,onecannotsimplyreachconclusionswithouttakingvariousfactorsintoaccount.Otherwise,onewouldmakereductionist(化约主义者)mistakes.Inthiscase,thosewhothinkcollegestudentsarenotascompetentasbeforehavemadethiskindofmistake.Theyjustattributecollegegraduates’difficultiesinfindingjobstotheirincompetence,withoutexploringthesocialandeconomicsituations.
3.IsItMeaningfultoReceiveCollegeEducation?
Giventhefactthatmanycollegestudentshavedifficultiesinfindingjobsintherecent,thousandsofhighschoolstudentsarereportedtorefusetotaketheNationalCollegeEntranceExamination.Thenewsseemssoconvincingthatmanystudents,theirparents,andthesocietyreachtheconclusionthatreceivingcollegeeducationisawasteoftimeandmoney.Undoubtedly,thesestudentscanearnsomemoneyworkinginbigcitiesorrunningtheirownbusinessinthenearfuture.However,Iamofopinionthatthisviewismyopic,whichistothedetrimentofpersonaldevelopmentandChina’soverallgrowthinthelongterm.
Firstly,intermsofpersonaldevelopment,universityisnotavocationaltrainingcenterdespitethefactthatauniversitydiplomaindicatesgraduatesaremorelikelytofinddecentjobs.Instead,universityisaplaceforpersonalcultivationandimprovement.Inuniversities,studentswilllearntofindtheirrealinterests,perfecttheirpersonality,andformrightoutlookstowardtheworld.Furthermore,studentswilllearntogather,analyze,andevaluateinformationsothattheycanresolveproblemsintheirlives.Forthosewhoaresuspiciousofthevalueofhigherlearning,tosomeextent,theycanberegardedasplutolatry(拜金主义).Theyworshipmoneyandbelievethatmoneyiseverythingintheirlives.
Secondly,intermsofnationalgrowth,theadvancementofanationischaracterizedbyitsgreatnessofhigheducation.Inthissense,universitiesarethecentersofresearchandacademicexploration.TaketheUnitedStatesforinstance.Amongthetop100universitiesintheworld,themajorityofthemarelocatedintheUnitedStates.TheadvancementofUShigheducationisindicativeofthefactthatthoseuniversitiesproducethemostNobelPrizelaureatesincomparisonwithothercountries.Americanuniversitiesalsoturnouttobeamagnetformostsmartstudentsaroundtheworld.ThoseuniversitiescontributetremendoussharetotheUS’growththroughscientificandtechnologicalsupport.InChina,ifthebeliefthatreceivingcollegeeducationisawasteoftimeandmoneycannotbecorrectedintime,itisinevitablethatChinacanonlyreapshort-termGDPgrowthbutwillbedeprivedofopportunitytobecomeacompetitiveinternationalplayersinthelongrun,forthehumanresourcewillbedrainedeventually.
Insum,receivingcollegeeducationwillbenefitbothindividualandthecountry.Indicativeofthedirejobmarketforcollegegraduatesisnottheuselessnessofcollegeeducation.Instead,collegeeducationmeansweshouldstudyhardertomakeafullpreparationforthefuture.
