Realizingshemayhavemadeanimportantdiscovery,Bertocchiniteamedupwithotherresearcherstoconductfurtherresearch.Theybeganbyplacing100wormsonsomeplasticbagsanddiscoveredthatovera24-hourperiod,thewormsmanagedtochewthrough92milligramsofplastic.Theresearchersmakeanappropriatejudgmentthatatthisrate,thegroupofwormscoulddegrade（降解）anaverage-sized5.5-gramplasticbagwithinamonth.Toruleoutthepossibilitythatchewingwascausingthedegradation,theresearchersspreadthesoftwetsubstanceinsidethebodyofsomerecentlydeadwormsonasheetofplastic.Sureenough,eventheliquidwasabletoeatthroughthematerial,confirmingthatthewormshaveplastic-digestingenzymes（酶）.

Whilethenewsiscertainlyencouraging,noteveryoneisconvinced.TheMichiganStateUniversity’sRamaniNarayanbelievesthetinypiecesofmicroplasticsreleasedbytheplastic-eatingwormswouldpickupharmfulsubstancesandtransportthemupthefoodchain,causing,evenmore,harmtotheenvironmentandhumanhealth.SusanSelke,directorofMichiganStateUniversitySchoolofPackaging,isconcernedthatthewormswillnotbeabletosurviveinanoxygen-freelandfillswherelargeamountsofwastematerialareburiedundertheearth.
