　　英语寓言故事：

一颗小苹果树（中英对照）

　　Amanwalkinginthenightslippedfromarock.Afraidthathewouldfalldownthousandsoffeet,becauseheknewthatplacewasaverydeepvalley,hetookholdofabranchthatwashangingovertherock.Inthenightallhecoulsseewasabottomlessabyss.Heshouted,hisownshoutreflectedback--therewasnobodytohear.

　　Youcanimaginethatmanandhiswholenightofscare.Everymomenttherewasdeath,hishandswerebecomingcold,hewaslosinghisgrip......andasthesuncameouthelookeddownandhelaughed.Therewasnoabyss.Justsixinchesdowntherewasarock.Hecouldhaverestedthewholenight,sleptwell---therockwasbigenough---butthewholenightwasanightmare.

　　Fearisonlysixinchesdeep.Nowitisuptoyouwhetheryouwanttogoonclingtothebranchandturnyourlifeintoanightmare,orwhetheryouwouldlovetoleavethebranchandstandonyourfeet.

　　Thereisnothingtofear.

　　一个人在赶夜路时，突然从岩石上跌了下去，吓得他赶紧抓住了岩石上的树枝，因为他知道这一带有个深谷，一不小心就会跌入上千英尺的深渊。

一晚上，他唯一能看到的就是深不见底的峡谷。

他大呼救命，但只听到了自己的回音---没有人能听到他呼救。

　　你可以想象一下他的处境和整晚的恐惧。

死神随时都可能降临。

他的手开始发凉，渐渐地抓不住了...当太阳升起的时候，他朝下看了看，笑了。

下面压根就没有什么深渊。

在他下方六英尺的地方有一块大石头。

岩石那么大，他本可以在那儿休息一个晚上，美美的睡上一觉，但昨晚他却在梦魇中度过。

　　恐惧只是六英尺的距离而已。

接下来，到了你做决定的时候了：

你是想要继续抓着树枝过梦魇一般的生活，还是更喜欢把手从树枝上松开，双脚着地？

　　真的没有什么好害怕的。

　　LionwasawakenedfromsleepbyaMouserunningoverhisface.Risingupinanger,hecaughthimandwasabouttokillhim,whentheMousepiteouslyentreated,saying：

“Ifyouwouldonlysparemylife,Iwouldbesuretorepayyourkindness.”TheLionlaughedandlethimgo.

　　IthappenedshortlyafterthisthattheLionwascaughtbysomehunters,whoboundhimbystrongropestotheground.TheMouse,recognizinghisroar,cameup,andgnawedtheropewithhisteeth,andsettinghimfree,

　　exclaimed：

“Youridiculedtheideaofmyeverbeingabletohelpyou,notexpectingtoreceivefrommeany

　　repaymentofyourfavour；butnowyouknowthatitispossibleforevenaMousetoconferbenefitsonaLion.”狮和鼠

　　一只老鼠从一只狮子面前跑过去，将它从梦中吵醒。

　　狮子生气地跳起来，捉住老鼠，要弄死它。

老鼠哀求说：

「只要你肯饶恕我这条小生命，我将来一定会报答你的大恩。

」狮子便笑着放了它。

　　后来狮子被几个猎人捉住，用粗绳捆绑倒在地上。

老鼠听出是狮子的吼声，走来用牙齿咬断绳索，释放了它，并大声说：

「你当时嘲笑我想帮你的忙，而且也不指望我有什么机会报答。

但是你现在知道了，就算是小老鼠，也能向狮子效劳的。

」

　　TheBatandtheWeaselsa

　　BatfallinguponthegroundwascaughtbyaWeasel,ofwhomheearnestlybesoughthislife.TheWeasel

　　refused,saying,thathewasbynaturetheenemyofallbirds.TheBatassuredhimthathewasnotabird,butamouse,andthussavedhislife.

　　ShortlyafterwardstheBatagainfellontheground,andwascarghtbyanotherWeasel,whomhelikewise

　　entreatednottoeathim.TheWeaselsaidthathehadaspecialhostilitytomice.TheBatassuredhimthathewas

　　notamouse,butabat;andthusasecond　iswisetoturncircumstancestogoodaccount.

　　蝙蝠和鼠狼

　　一只蝙蝠坠落到地面上来，被一只鼠狼捉住了，蝙蝠哀求讨饶。

鼠狼不答应，说它自己最爱和鸟类为敌。

蝙蝠便证明它自己不是鸟，只是一只老鼠，因此鼠狼就放了它。

　　不久这只蝙蝠又坠落到地上来，被另一只鼠狼捉住，它同样地哀求讨饶。

那鼠狼说它自己最恨老鼠，蝙蝠证明自己并不是老鼠，而是一只蝙蝠；因此，它第二次又安然地逃离危险了。

随机应变乃聪明之举。

　　ThemiserandhisgoldOnceuponatimetherewasamiser.Hehidhisgoldunderatree.Everyweekheusedtodigitup.

　　Onenightarobberstoleallthegold.Whenthemisercameagain,hefoundnothingbutanemptyhole.

　　Hewassurprised,andthenburstinto　theneighborsgatheredaroundhim.

　　Hetoldthemhowheusedtocomeandvisithisgold."Didyouevertakeanyofitout?

"askedoneofthem."No,"hesaid,"Ionlycametolookatit.""Thencomeagainandlookatthehole,"saidtheneighbor,"itwillbethesameaslookingatthegold."

　　守财奴

　　从前，有个守财奴将他的金块埋到一棵树下，每周他都去把他挖出来看看。

　　一天晚上，一个小偷挖走了所有的金块。

守财奴再来查看时，发现除了一个空洞什么都没有了。

　　守财奴便捶胸痛哭。

哭声引来了邻居

　　他告诉他们这里原来有他的金块。

　　问明了原因后，一个邻居问：

“你使用过这些金块吗？

”“没用过，”他说，“我只是时常来看看。

”“那么，以后再来看这个洞，”邻居说，“就像以前有金块时一样。

”

　　Fatherhadafamilyofsonswhowereperpetuallyquarrellingamongthemselves.Whenhefailedtohealtheirdisputesbyhisexhortations,hedeterminedtogivethemapracticalillustrationoftheevilsofdisunion;andforthispurposeheonedaytoldthemtobringhimabundleofsticks.Whentheyhaddoneso,heplacedthefaggotintothehandsofeachoftheminsuccession,andorderedthemtobreakitinpieces.Theyeachtriedwithalltheirstrength,andwerenotabletodoit.

　　Henextunclosedthefaggot,andtookthesticksseparately,onebyone,andagainputthemintotheirhands,onwhichtheybrokethemeasily.Hethen

　　addressedtheminthesewords:

"Mysons,ifyouareofonemind,andunitetoassisteachother,youwillbeasthisfaggot,uninjuredbyalltheattemptsofyourenemies;butifyouaredividedamongyourselves,youwillbebrokenaseasilyasthesesticks."

　　父亲和孩子们

　　一位父亲有几个孩子，这些孩子时常发生口角。

他丝毫没有办法来劝阻他们，只好让他们看看不合群所带来害处的例子。

为了达到这个目的，有一天他叫他们替他拿一捆细柴来。

当他们把柴带来时，他便先后地将那捆柴放在每一个孩子的手中，吩咐他们弄断这捆柴。

他们一个个尽力去试，总是不能成功。

　　然后他解开那捆柴，一根根地放在他们手里，如此一来，他们便毫不费力地折断了。

于是他就告诉他们说：

「孩子们！

如果你们大家团结一致，互相帮助，你们就像这捆柴一样，不能被你们的敌人折断；但如果你们自行，你们就将和这些散柴一
