Thiscourseemphasizesempowerment,participation,economicandsocialjustice;

anditfeaturescollectiveactionstrategiesforcombatingracism,sexism,classism,heterosexism,ageism,mentalism,ableismandotherformsofoppression.Italsostressestheimportanceofinvolvingcommunitymembersinallaspectsofthepolicies,programs,institutions,anddecisionswhichimpacttheirlives.

COURSEOBJECTIVES

I.Toestablishtheconceptsofempowerment,participation,economicand

socialjusticeasavaluebaseforcommunityorganizingpracticeandto

familiarizestudentswiththeunderlyingphilosophicalandtheoretical

principles.

II.Toprovideaframeworkandoverviewofcommunityorganizing

approachesforsocialchange.

III.Tohelpstudentsexaminetheuseofselfintheorganizingprocess,

includingrolesandethicaldilemmas.

IV.Tofamiliarizestudentswiththebasicphilosophy,goals,andmethodology

ofbothsocialactionandcommunitydevelopmentapproachesto

organizing.

V.Toexamineandcritiquearangeoforganizingmodelsutilizedinurban

communities.

VI.Tohelpstudentsdeveloporganizationalbuildingskills,includinggroundwork,legitimization,organizingcommitteeformation,andrecruitmenttechniques.

VII.Toexaminearangeofrecruitment/outreachtechniquesandtosharpen

students’skillsforfosteringcommunityparticipation.

VIII.Toenablestudentstolearnhowtofindanddevelopeffective

organizationalleadership.

IX.Todevelopstudents'

strategicandtacticalabilities,includingaction

researchmethodology,strategicanalysis,anddirectactiontechniques.

X.Toincreasestudents'

commitmenttocommunityempowerment,the

eliminationofoppression,andtheattainmentofeconomicandsocial

justice.

Bytheendofthecourse,studentswillbeableto:

1.Applycommunityorganizingvalues,principles,methods,andskillstoavarietyofmacropracticeinterventions.

2.Examinetheappropriateandethicaluseofselfinanassortmentofrolesintheorganizingprocess.

3.Understandthebasicphilosophy,goals,andmethodologyofbothsocialactionandcommunitydevelopmentapproachestoorganizing.

4.Criticallyexamineawidevarietyofcommunityorganizingmodels.

5.Exerciseorganizationalbuildingskills,includinggroundwork,legitimization,organizingcommitteeformation,andrecruitment.

6.Findanddevelopindigenouscommunityleadershipforgrassrootsorganizations.

7.Worktogetherwithorganizationalmembersandleaderstocarryoutactionresearch.

8.Facilitateaplanningprocessforengaginginstrategicanalysis.

9.Assistorganizationalleadersandmembersinimplementingappropriatecollectiveactionstrategiesanddirectactiontactics.

10.Facilitateanevaluationprocessforassessingtheeffectivenessof

organizationalinitiatives,campaigns,andevents.
